Johnson says he's leaving GOP for Libertarians
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) ? Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, a longshot candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, said Wednesday he is leaving the GOP in favor of running as a Libertarian.
Johnson told a news conference at the state Capitol that the decision was difficult but that he "was deeply disappointed by the treatment I received in the Republican nomination process."
Johnson has been excluded from all but two GOP presidential debates. He also has barely registered in the polls.
The former two-term governor said that if he earns the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination, he will appear on the ballots in all 50 states and will not be "held hostage to a system rigged for the wealthiest and best-known candidates in a handful of states who happen to have early primaries."
Johnson is fiscally conservative but supports such liberal causes as legalizing marijuana and abortion rights.

Website says Sinead O'Connor's marriage is over (AP)
LONDON ? A statement on Sinead O'Connor's website says her brief marriage to therapist Barry Herridge has ended amicably.
The statement on sineadoconnor.com says "the marriage was 16 days. We lived together for 7 days only.. Until Xmas eve."
The statement says "from the moment myself and my husband got together ... there was intense pressure placed upon him by certain people in his life, not to be involved with me."
She adds: "As my good friend said `well, at least you got married in Vegas in a pink Cadillac! Can't get more Rock n Roll than that.'"
Roman Szendrey, who maintains the site, told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday the report is accurate and was personally posted by O'Connor.

Holland Taylor on life, love and Charlie Sheen (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Holland Taylor offers no apologies for never settling down, getting married or having children.
The 68-year-old Emmy-winning actress, currently starring in her one-woman show "Ann" at Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center, simply never had the time.
"I always did think I would be married and settled down by now but maybe I ain't ready," she said, sounding a lot like the over-the-top mother of Jon Cryer she portrays in the CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men." "Then again, maybe I won't ever be ready."
Taylor's career blossomed in her mid-30s and the New Yorker with Pennsylvania roots has been on a dizzying pace ever since, starring on the stage, in television and on film.
Having a family just wasn't in the script.
"I'm very, very happy. I just never was the marrying kind," she said. "I am a serial monogamist. I don't have multiple relationships at once.
"I've had a long life and a lot of relationships and not one of them do I wish -- well, I take that back -- there are a couple I could have done without," she added with a chuckle.
Taylor's current love is "Ann," which is based on the life of quick-witted, sharp-tongued former Texas Gov. Ann Richards.
Seconds after a recent performance at the Kennedy Center, the audience was on its feet, cheering wildly for the show and its star.
While the applause was quick that night, overall it was a long time coming for Taylor. The actress conceived the show nearly six years ago and has been researching it and writing it ever since. She admits to being captivated about the dynamic Richards, who died in 2006 of esophageal cancer.
"I had a lot of creative feelings about her," Taylor told Reuters. "If I had been a painter, it would have been a painting. If I had been a composer, it would have been a piece of music. I had to do something with my feelings about this loss."
Taylor said the idea of taking Richards' story to the stage "came to me very suddenly."
"I was literally driving to work at my television show one day and I had to pull off the highway onto the service road," she recalled. "I had the idea it should be a play because of her liveliness and her contact with the audience.
"She herself said, 'I was good as a candidate over the years only because I connect with people one on one.' I decided right then a play is how it should be done."
NO LOOKING BACK
Taylor has perfected Richards' Southern drawl and eerily looks like the Texas politician whose energizing keynote address at the 1988 Democratic National Convention elevated her to widespread prominence.
The actress insists she brought Richards' story to the stage not because she could play the role but to celebrate the politician's life.
"She was not a person who looked back. Ever," Taylor said. "She did not revisit things. She was rolling along, like a wheel that goes under and then over. Under and over. But always moving forward.
"If she fell, she fell forward. And that is not the way I am. I get very upset. I can get very waylaid. I get blue. I can become chicken little.
"And now when I do, I think, 'What would Ann Richards think of this behavior?'"
During breaks in the show's pre-Broadway tour -- it is playing now through January 15 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts -- Taylor will continue her role on "Two and a Half Men." She is glad its former star, Charlie Sheen, survived his firing and public meltdown earlier this year and has moved on.
"It was painful for me to see him in pain and he did something very, very dangerous by first of all, obviously doing drugs to that degree is dangerous, but quitting very violently is very dangerous too," she said.
"And he went through really an amazing thing out in public. I just was terrified for him. I think everybody was. But he got through it alive which is all anybody wanted."
Taylor said she would see his daily rants and described them as "very scary."
"There were a few days there where I would open the paper, and I would be so frightened to see that something really terrible happened," she said. "I'm glad he escaped that."
Holland Taylor is in a good spot these days, healthy, happy and with more job offers than she knows what do with. Just don't expect her to slow down anytime soon.
With a laugh, she said she would "commit an ax murder" before attempting to conceal her age.
"It would seem so silly," she said backstage at the Kennedy Center. "I really, truly genuinely struggled quite hard until I was in my mid-30s. "I personally was at sea.
"But that's long gone. I'm doing OK. I'm better than OK."

China Petrochemical Corp. Completes Purchase of Daylight Energy

Dec. 24 (Bloomberg) -- China Petrochemical Corp., the nation?s biggest oil refiner, completed the purchase of Canada?s Daylight Energy Ltd. for about C$2.2 billion ($2.16 billion), the company said in an e-mailed statement yesterday.
Sinopec, as the Chinese company is known, said it paid C$10.08 a share in cash for Calgary-based Daylight.
Cong Peixin, a spokesman for the China Petrochemical unit that carried out the transaction, declined to elaborate on the statement. Daylight confirmed the completed sale in a statement released yesterday.
The purchase gives the Beijing-based company access to more than 300,000 acres of land in areas rich with oil and natural gas, after falling crude prices made valuations attractive.
Sinopec Group, China National Petroleum Corp. and Cnooc Ltd. are seeking to gain technology through partnerships in order to develop China?s shale-gas reserves, estimated to be larger than those in the U.S.
China, the world?s biggest energy consumer, has partnered with Exxon Mobil Corp., Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Chevron Corp. to explore possible shale wells.
Chinese companies have announced $18.3 billion worth of bids this year for overseas oil and gas exploration and production companies, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Cnooc bought Canada?s Opti Canada Inc. in November for $34 million in cash, agreeing to take on $2.4 billion in debt.
Daylight?s proven and probable reserves rose 46 percent to the equivalent of 174 million barrels of oil at the end of 2010, the company said March 1. The company?s production was 35 million barrels in the third quarter, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

President, first lady offer holiday tribute and Merry Christmas to troops
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is wishing a Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all Americans in his weekly radio and Internet address, with a special message of thanks to the troops.
"Let's take a moment to give thanks for their service; for their families' service; for our veterans' service," the president said Saturday. "And let's say a prayer for all our troops standing post all over the world, especially our brave men and women in Afghanistan who are serving, even as we speak, in harm's way to protect the freedoms and security we hold dear."
The president was joined by his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, in recording the weekly address. Mrs. Obama added her own word of thanks, saying "let's make sure that all of them know just how much we appreciate everything they do."
The president noted that with the Iraq war over, the last troops from that conflict are home for the holidays. And the Obamas urged people to find a way to give back to the military, directing listeners to Joining Forces, the first lady's initiative to help military families.
Republicans also set aside talk of legislative and partisan battles in their weekly address, recorded by Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind.
Pence urged Americans to remember the troops and also to think of those who are less fortunate, struggling to make ends meet in the tough economy or unable to find work.
"This holiday season, let's all make a special effort to come alongside these families in their time of need and support local charities as they provide for the needs across our communities," Pence said. "Let's also make a point to personally reach out to that neighbor or friend who needs a helping hand, a kind greeting or an invitation ? it might be just the gift someone needed most."

The worldwide trend is not in doubt. China arrests executives in insider trading crackdown

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China has arrested former executives at two brokerages on charges of insider trading, the securities watchdog said, as part of a crackdown on market malpractice that the new head of the agency has said will be one of his top priorities.
The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) detailed on its website four cases of market manipulation and insider trading that it has investigated, including two that led to the arrests of former executives at Southwest Securities Co Ltd (600369.SS) and Northeast Securities Co Ltd (000686.SZ).
The cases are the latest in an increasingly high-profile campaign by CSRC chief Guo Shuqing to stamp out rampant wrongdoing in the country's stock market, which has languished despite the country's nearly double-digit economic growth.
In one case, Qin Xuan, a Northeast Securities manager who advised on the restructuring of a Shenzhen-listed pharmaceutical firm, used the information he obtained in that process to trade the company's stock, and also leaked the information to a friend.
In another case, Ji Minbo, former vice president at Southwest Securities, gained 20 million yuan ($3.2 million) by using information that was not publicly disclosed to trade more than 40 stocks from 2009 to 2011, the CSRC said.
"No matter how concealed illegal practices are, inside traders will eventually be punished by law," the CSRC said in the statement that detailed Qin's case.
The other two cases on which the agency published details involved securities consultants using commentators, research reports and media to talk up stocks they own before selling the securities to make a profit.
China has been stepping up its crackdown against illegal trading activities and tightening supervision against fund managers, brokerages, consultants and executives of listed companies in a bid to build confidence in a stock market where illegal trading activities have been rampant.
In August, former stock analyst Wang Jianzhong was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined 125 million yuan, on top of having illicit earnings of the same amount confiscated, becoming China's first convicted stock market manipulator.
Guo, the former China Construction Bank chairman who became CSRC chief in late October, said in a speech in early December that the regulator would adamantly crack down on accounting fraud, insider trading and other illegal activities.
Earlier this month, the agency exposed the country's biggest-ever case of stock market manipulation that involved an investment company, Guangdong Zhonghengxin, orchestrating "pump-and-dump" schemes related to 552 stocks, out of which it made 426 million yuan.
The CSRC has also recently published rules that would require listed companies to keep records on anyone who may have access to price-sensitive information.

Entercom Communications (NYSE: ETM) announced today that its wholly owned finance subsidiary Entercom Radio, LLC (?Entercom Radio?) has commenced an exchange offer for its outstanding unregistered 10?% Senior Notes due 2019, Series A. These notes were originally issued on November 23, 2011, in a private placement exempt from the registration requirements of the Securities Act of 1933, as amended, in an aggregate principal amount of $220 million. Holders of these notes may exchange them for an equal principal amount of a new issue of 10?% Senior Notes due 2019, Series B, pursuant to an effective registration statement on Form S-4 filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Terms of the new notes are substantially identical to those of the original notes, except that the transfer restrictions and registration rights relating to the original notes do not apply to the new notes.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Troops commanded by relatives of Yemen's outgoing president attacked a crowd of more than 100,000 protesters peacefully marching into the capital Saturday, killing at least nine and driving the president to promise to leave the country.
Yielding to pressure to defuse the country's turmoil, president Ali Abdullah Saleh said Saturday he would leave for the United States after forces overseen by his son and nephew opened fire on the protesters.
They had marched for four days and 200 miles on foot to pressure the government not to give Saleh immunity from prosecution, in the first march of its kind in the impoverished nation that is home to a dangerous al-Qaida offshoot. After protesters arrived at the southern entrances to the capital, forces of the elite Republican Guard fired on them with automatic weapons, tear gas and water cannons, sparking hours of clashes.
The violence illustrated the confusion in Yemen caused by the slow-motion exit of Saleh from power after 33 years of rule.
After entrenching for months against massive protests across the country demanding his ouster, the president signed a deal in late November handing over his powers to the vice president and committing to leave office in return for immunity.
But Saleh retains his title and remains in the presidential palace, lauded as "his excellency the president" by state media controlled by his supporters.
Opponents say he has continued to wield influence through his relatives and loyalists who still hold powerful positions, undermining Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. That has raised fears that Saleh was looking for a way to continue to rule, even as a national unity government prepares for presidential elections set for February.
The Republican Guard forces, led by Saleh's son Ahmed, and Central Security troops, led by his nephew, have defied orders from Hadi that they pull back from positions in the streets of the capital, even up to a Saturday deadline.
Saleh had been expected to leave Yemen soon after he signed the U.S.- and Saudi-backed accord, ostensibly to undergo treatment for wounds suffered in an assassination attempt in June. But officials say he has stalled on leaving.
Hours after the fighting erupted in Sanaa, Saleh told reporters at his palace that he would leave "in the coming days" for the U.S.
"Not for treatment, but to get out of sight and the media to calm the atmosphere for the unity government to hold the presidential election," he said.
He said he would eventually return and pursue "political work as an opposition figure."
Government officials said ambassadors from the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council had been in contact with Saleh in the past week to pressure him to leave. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.
There was no immediate confirmation from American officials that Saleh would come to the U.S., though Yemeni officials said he had received a visa.
The protesters, who have been massing by the millions around the country since February, oppose an accord for Saleh's exit because it would grant him immunity and because it keeps many of his regime figures in place.
Saturday's "March of Life" demanded Saleh be put on trial for the killings of protesters during his crackdown on the uprising. The crowds marched from Taiz, a city that has been a major opposition center 170 miles (270 kilometers) to the south of Sanaa.
The marchers Saturday were trying to pass down a main avenue where the presidential palace is located when they were met by Republican Guard and Central Security forces, backed by tanks. Troops fired on the crowd, who responded by throwing stones.
The fighting stopped after several hours when the loyalist forces allowed the protesters to continue their march into Sanaa. Amid the clashes, Hadi issued orders for the troops to step aside, but government officials said they only obeyed after international ambassadors contacted Saleh's son Ahmed.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the behind-the-scenes efforts.
At least eight protesters, including a woman, were killed and more than 200 injured, including 61 wounded by gunfire, according to two doctors at a protesters' field hospital, Mohammed el-Qoutbi and Sadeq el-Shogaa.
In all, at least 500,000 protesters had joined the march by the time it reached Change Square, according to activists. A smaller group broke away and marched on the presidential palace, where troops opened fire on them, killing a ninth protester and wounding four more, activist Abdel-Karim el-Khaywani said.
The violence sparked Prime Minister Mohammed Basindwa to ask a committee to investigate.
"The prime minister called on the Defense and Interior ministers to create an investigative committee into what happened and how protesters were killed," said Information Minister Ali el-Emrani. "The results of the investigation will be shown to the prime minister for the correct course of action."
A human rights organization appeared to lay responsibility on Saleh and the new unity government.
"The shooting of peaceful demonstrators by forces under the control of President Saleh and his top commanders is further proof that promises of immunity encourage rather than deter illegal attacks," Letta Tayler, Human Rights Watch Yemen researcher, said in a statement Saturday.
"Systematic or widespread unlawful killings, carried out as a state policy, are likely to be crimes against humanity," she added.
Even if Saleh carries out his promise to leave, his loyalists remain in place. The unity government is split between opposition parties and Saleh's Congress Party, which holds the powerful defense, oil and foreign affairs ministries. A military committee that Hadi heads to manage military affairs also includes the Congress Party.
There is also confusion over when Saleh is supposed to formally leave as president.
According to the deal signed Nov. 23, the parliament was supposed to convene 29 days later to approve immunity for Saleh; on the next day, he would step down. But parliament has not formally taken up the issue. Some lawmakers say that the "mechanisms" for the deal give them until the February presidential election to grant immunity.
Parliament convened for the first time Saturday since March but did not discuss immunity. Instead it discussed the program of the national unity government, headed by Basindwa, a veteran independent politician. The body can not take action by majority vote; it must reach consensus between Congress Party lawmakers and the opposition.
In past weeks, Saleh loyalists have repeatedly worked counter to Hadi.
Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi, a veteran of Saleh's regime, rejected a U.N. request to send a human rights fact-finding team to Yemen, without consulting with Hadi. When he learned about the incident, Hadi gave his approval.
Last week, the Military Committee ordered the removal of the top military commander in Taiz for the killings of protesters there. But the governor of Taiz, a Saleh loyalist, did not carry out the order.

Virgina ballot shows Gingrich campaign woes (Reuters)
ARLINGTON, Virginia (Reuters) ? Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich made a last-minute dash to get on the ballot for the Republican primary in Virginia, in another sign his campaign may not be ready for prime time and could struggle to beat President Barack Obama next year.
Gingrich, who is polling as a frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination both nationally and in early voting states, was forced to hold a rally of supporters in Virginia on Wednesday night as he hurries to get the 10,000 signatures necessary to get on the ballot there.
Gingrich and his wife Callista attended the event at a hotel just across the Potomac River from Washington, far from Iowa where voters are less than two weeks away from kicking off the 2012 election season on January 3. Most of his party rivals are already campaigning in Iowa or New Hampshire.
The former House of Representatives speaker has acknowledged that his campaign is behind and hustling to translate recent increased support for his candidacy to organizational capabilities.
Gingrich failed to qualify for the ballot in Missouri and barely made the deadline in Ohio, a key swing state in the general election. About 250 people attended the event in Virginia, where Gingrich said his campaign is "going to turn in vastly more signatures than you need."
By contrast, his main Republican rival Mitt Romney has a bigger and slicker campaign organization. The former Massachusetts governor's staff has already handed in 16,000 signatures to get on the Virginia ballot.
Gingrich said in New Hampshire earlier that his last-minute scramble should not lead Republicans to believe that Romney is a more viable candidate than he is.
"It shows you that a guy who runs for six years and has millions of dollars has a different operational style than the guy who arouses thousands of people," Gingrich said.
Kevin Madden, an informal adviser to Romney's campaign, scoffed at Gingrich's troubles in Virginia, where the former speaker lives in a wealthy suburb of Washington.
"The effort to defeat President Obama in 2012 is of utmost importance to Republican voters," Madden said. "If, like Newt Gingrich, you're just going to casually wing it in a primary campaign, it's an indication you plan to just wing it in a general election campaign.
"We need a nominee who will be organized and disciplined, not scrambling around for ballot access at the last minute."
In Virginia, a candidate has to present at least 10,000 signatures of registered voters, with 400 coming from each of the state's 11 congressional districts.
Gingrich has until 5 p.m. on Thursday to deliver those to the state board of elections in sealed boxes. A spokesman for the board said it recommends that candidates present at least 15,000 signatures - 700 from each district - to ensure legitimacy.
Gingrich said he has enough signatures to meet the requirement. He will hold another event on Thursday in Richmond, Virginia and will hand-deliver the signatures, he said.
Todd Elliott, a Gingrich supporter from Columbus, Ohio, attended the event in Virginia and said he is worried that Gingrich has to spend time in Virginia playing catch-up to Romney on organizational matters.
"There's obviously some concern there," Elliott said. "He should be in Iowa."
Gingrich's campaign all but collapsed last summer when much of his staff quit over questions about management.
If the race goes to many states, as Romney's campaign is anticipating, winning states like Virginia, which holds its primary on March 6, could determine the Republican nominee.
Lara Brown, a political science professor at Villanova University and author of the book "Jockeying for the American Presidency," said Gingrich's late-to-the-party style is "not a reassuring sign for those looking for clues into how he'd act as president."
"Although there is much more to governing than campaigning, candidates must show voters that they are competent enough to run a nationwide presidential campaign if they have any hope of sitting in the Oval Office," Brown said.
Gingrich is an unlikely front-runner as a longtime Washington insider with a history of bombastic, controversial statements, marital infidelity and private-sector work that could be confused with lobbying activity.
The eventual Republican nominee will Obama, a Democrat, in the November 2012 election.

Census: Population slowing in large portions of US (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Many states that posted big population gains in the 2010 census are now seeing their decade-long growth fizzle, hurt by a prolonged economic slump that is stretching into larger portions of the South and West.
New 2011 estimates released Wednesday by the Census Bureau are the first state numbers since the 2010 count, which found the nation's population growth shifting to the Sun Belt.
As a whole, the U.S. population grew by 2.8 million, reaching 311.6 million people. That growth of 0.92 percent was the lowest since the mid-1940s, hurt by fewer births and less immigration following the recent recession. From 2000 to 2010, the government previously reported the nation grew 9.7 percent, the lowest since the Great Depression.
"The nation's overall growth rate is now at its lowest point since before the baby boom," said Census Bureau director Robert Groves.
Washington, D.C., grew faster than any state in the nation, climbing by 2.7 percent from April 2010 to July of this year. It was the first time the District led states in growth since the early 1940s. Texas was next-fastest growing, followed by Utah, Alaska, Colorado and North Dakota.
States that prospered during the real estate boom, such as Arizona, Nevada and Florida, were already beginning to show a drop in growth when their populations were officially counted a year ago. Since then, the slowdown has spread to other burgeoning areas whose populations had previously withstood much of the dampening effects of the sluggish economy.
They include Georgia, South Carolina, Utah and Idaho, whose annual growth over the last two years is now the weakest than any time in the last decade.
Texas, the big 2010 winner owing to a diversified economy that attracted new residents during the recession, is seeing its growth slow as fewer people move there. In contrast, Democratic-leaning states such as California and New York are losing fewer residents to other states than before.
"Record low migration has continued to put a damper on what looked to be a Sun Belt growth explosion just five years ago," said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, who reviewed the numbers. "States that seemed immune from the housing bust are now experiencing declining population growth as employment opportunities in a variety of industries contract, and as mortgages seem nearly impossible to obtain."
The Census Bureau released state population estimates as of July 1, 2011. The data show annual changes through births, deaths, and domestic and foreign migration.
In all, 38 states showed lower growth in 2010 and 2011 than in either of the previous two years during the recession. Twenty-three of these states are in South and West region. Moreover, 28 states showed either slower in-migration or greater out-migration than in either of the first two years of the recession. These include Nevada and Arizona, but also Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado and Utah.
Three states ? Rhode Island, Michigan and Maine ? have lost population since the 2010 census.
Kimball Brace, president of Election Data Services, said if the 2010 count had been held this year, Minnesota would have lost a seat in the House of Representatives and North Carolina would have picked up one due to the shifting population figures. Based on continuing losses, Rhode Island is now closer to losing one of its seats with just 41,000 people to spare. "It's definitely not moving in Rhode Island's favor," he said.
California remained the most populous state, followed by Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois.
The slowing U.S. growth comes as foreign immigration has declined since the recession, and fewer people are moving around within the nation's borders. In the last year, just 11.6 percent of the nation's population moved to a new home ? the lowest since the government began tracking information on movers in 1948.
A few bright spots include North Dakota and Alaska, whose thriving energy industries have helped attract residents and buoy employment rates. Both ranked among the top six fastest-growing states for the last two years, ranking higher than Nevada, Arizona, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.
"After years of population decline, it's welcomed news to see that our economic growth over the last decade continues to keep North Dakotans home," said Gov. Jack Dalrymple. State demographers attributed the turnaround to an oil boom. The state's population gain since the 2010 census is nearly one-third as great as that during the entire decade from 2000-2010.
Florida, which saw its growth drop off sharply at the end of the last decade, is now showing signs of a slow recovery.
From 2007 to 2009, Florida saw more people move out than move in for the first time since the early 1970s; the latest estimates are now showing some rebound in population growth, due to fewer people who are moving to other southern states and greater gains from the northeast.
"The worst may be over for Florida," said Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer and sociologist at the University of New Hampshire.
As a whole, the South last year was the only U.S. region with a statistically significant increase in the poverty rate to 16.9 percent, higher than the national average of 15.1 percent. Some economists say huge swaths of the region could face a tough recovery after experiencing dramatic swings of housing boom and bust.
In contrast, the District of Columbia's population has reversed decades of decline in the 2000s as young professionals flocked to the region. It topped 600,000 last year for the first time in nearly 20 years as the relative stability of federal government jobs helped insulate the district from the nation's economic woes.

The Maya Long Count calendar and its connection to 2012 have long been topics of controversy.

What is it about doomsday that draws a crowd?
Time after time, doomsayers have predicted the breakdown of society on a date certain, stirring up a buzz that builds to a crescendo and ends in a crash when doomsday doesn't come. 1844 brought the Great Disappointment, 1999 brought the Y2K alarm, 2011 brought the Rapture ruckus, and exactly a year from today, we're due for the Maya apocalypse.
If the past is any indicator, we'll be intently blogging, tweeting and indulging in black humor as the clock ticks?down to Dec. 21, 2012. Then, on Dec. 22,?we'll look?around?for the next doomsday.
It's just human nature, says Oregon State University sociologist?Richard Mitchell, author of a book about survivalist?trends titled "Dancing at Armageddon."?Telling stories and trading tips?for making it through the catastrophe that's ahead of us are pursuits that go back to ancient times.
"The attraction of all of these 'final crisis' tales is in the re-narration, the puzzling out of the details, the putting of fragmented facts into a coherent narrative," Mitchell said.
There are plenty of fragmented facts to choose from for 2012's "end of the world" narrative, including?the?Maya Long Count calendar, which supposedly winds down to the end of a 5,126-year-long cycle next Dec. 21. Today the?city?of Tapachula in southern?Mexico is?turning on a digital clock for the yearlong countdown, and Mayan priests?are performing a ceremony at a nearby archaeological site.
They're dramatizing the doomsday date?largely to drum up tourism. "If people are interested, we have to take advantage of this," Manolo Alfonso Pino, the regional tourism director for?Mexico's Chiapas state, told The Associated Press.
Other angles include the recent string of natural disasters?and extreme weather events,?the upswing in solar activity, and even the ramp-up of the Large Hadron Collider. The narrative gets embellished with additional twists from seemingly ancient lore, such as the?feared approach of a mysterious unseen planet, or a prediction that "30?hours of blindness" will beset us.
Some of the?concerns should be taken seriously ? for example, heightened solar storms really can have a negative effect on power grids and communication satellites, and the link between global warming and?wild weather is truly a valid topic of scientific debate. But there's no need to worry about Planet X or the LHC, and even the real concerns?aren't any cause for catastrophic talk. Don Yeomans, who heads the Near Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, addresses the 2012 hype in this video:
Mitchell doesn't expect the hard-core prophets of doom to accept the assurances of NASA ... or, for that matter, Cosmic Log. "They don't trust the media or academia, because we do in fact pose a real threat ??not to their physical well-being, but to their storytelling," he said.
Any potential for panic?
Is there a danger in doomsday stories? Based on his studies of survivalists, Mitchell doubts that 2012 worries will touch off?mass panic. He told me that folks who are worried about the collapse of society usually shy away from group activities. "There aren't any 'groups,' though one will pop up every once in a while, just to see and be seen," he said. "It's just a myth to suggest that groups exist, other than online mailing lists that nudge electrons back and forth. Largely, it's individual activity, if there's any activity at all."
But Rosanna Guadagno, a social psychologist at the University of Alabama, worries that websites and apocalyptic chatter on the Internet could create a "tipping point" for 2012 hysteria. "I think it's going to ramp up as we get closer to next December," she told me.

Guadagno's research focuses on the effect that computer-mediated communication has on social interaction and?influence.
"The one thing that we have going against us is the way that information spreads online," she told me on Tuesday. "For example, yesterday half the world thought Jon Bon Jovi was dead, just because one person set up a website."
What if?someone decided to go viral with the apocalypse?
"It won't take that many?people to take advantage of the Internet, to basically spread a lot of misinformation and cause panic among greater numbers," Guadagno said. "Hopefully the general public will be forewarned that this is all?bunk."
That's what we're here for. And we'll be here?whenever the bunk hits the fan during 2012. So whatever you do, DON'T PANIC!
Update for 5 p.m. ET: The doomsday predictions have centered on Dec. 21 as the fateful date, but that's not the unanimous opinion of experts on Maya glyphs. Penn Museum's Simon Martin, for example, is among those who say that Dec. 23 rather than Dec. 21? marks the end of the Maya calendar's millennia-long baktun cycle. Actually, the discrepancy may turn out to be?more than just a couple of days: Gerardo Aldana, a professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara, says conversions of the Maya calendar to the modern calendar could be off by as much as 50 to 100 years.
An exhibit at the Penn Museum, titled "Maya 2012: Lords of Time," will focus on the ancient Maya people's conceptions of?the universe, including?their ideas about time and the calendar. The?Philadelphia show opens on May 5 and?will end on ... Jan. 13, 2013.?
Extra credit: After 2012, what's the next doomsday to watch for? Here are a few dates that are popping up:
- 2014, when the LHC is due to reach full power. Some folks believe the second decade of any century is a rough time, just because it historically has been. Nicholas Boyle, a professor specializing in German literature and history at Cambridge University (and no close relative of mine), has already written a book?on that theme?titled "2014: How to Survive the Next World Crisis." Not sure what that has to do with German, but OK.?
- 2029, when futurist Ray Kurzweil expects machine intelligence to equal human intelligence.
- 2045, when Kurzweil foresees a global transformation?dramatic enough to be classified as a "singularity."
- 2060, the?"no-earlier-than" date for Isaac Newton's predicted doomsday.
It's interesting that these dates?are?all about 15 years apart. Is there a 15-year doomsday activity cycle, analogous to the 11-year solar activity cycle??That's one more thing to mull over in the comment section below.

Prince Harry says he is returning to Afghanistan (AP)
LONDON ? Britain's Prince Harry has said he will be deployed to Afghanistan for a second time ? almost four years after his previous secret mission was cut short when details leaked, according to a newspaper report Wednesday.
The 27-year-old Harry, who is third in line to the throne, told guests at a military awards ceremony Monday night that he would likely return next year, The Sun newspaper reported.
"I can't wait to get out there," Harry was quoted as saying.
Harry served as a battlefield air controller in Afghanistan for 10 weeks from Dec. 2007, but was sent home early after details were made public ? first by an Australian celebrity magazine and later on the Drudge Report website.
He became the first member of the British royal family to serve in a war zone since his uncle, Prince Andrew, flew as a helicopter pilot in the Falkland Islands conflict with Argentina in 1982.
A spokesman for St. James's Palace, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity, would not discuss the details of when or where Harry could serve in Afghanistan. He said it would be a "matter for the military chain of command."
Britain's defense ministry said it doesn't discuss the "deployments of individual service personnel."
The prince returned to Britain in November after two months of combat helicopter pilot training in the U.S. At the Naval Air Facility in El Centro, California, Harry flew Apache attack helicopters in the desert close to the Mexican border. During training at the Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field in southern Arizona, he fired missiles and rockets. During a brief break from maneuvers, Harry rented a Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Scottsdale and rode the six-hour trip to Las Vegas for a weekend visit.
Harry is now completing his Apache helicopter training at British Royal Air Force base Wattisham Station, in eastern England.
The newspaper said the prince told awards ceremony guests he now hoped to utilize his months of training.
"I'm looking forward to putting it into practice," it quoted him as saying.
In a speech to the ceremony, Harry told military colleagues of his admiration for them ? and for the families left behind when they are deployed.
"It's often said of our armed forces that they are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Well, I don't entirely buy that," Harry said. "Ordinary people don't put their lives on the line for distant folk, such as the Afghans, who need our help and are now turning their country around because of it."
Britain has around 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, based mainly in the southern Helmand province. In a visit Tuesday, Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed about 500 U.K. forces will be withdrawn in 2012, before the end of the international mission by the end of 2014.

It's a Small World: Kepler Spacecraft Discovers First Known Earth-Size Exoplanets

NASA's planet-hunting observatory claims its smallest two finds yet, but neither looks hospitable to life

NASA's Kepler spacecraft is starting to put the pieces together in its search for virtual Earth twins in other planetary systems. Kepler, which launched in 2009, is on the lookout for planets that are about the size of Earth and have temperate surface conditions. One half of that formula was realized on December 5 when mission scientists announced the discovery of a planet in the so-called habitable zone, called Kepler 22 b, a few times larger than Earth. Now Kepler has located its first two Earth-size worlds, and although neither are plausibly hospitable to life, it seems only a matter of time before the mission scores its ultimate goal.
The two new worlds orbit a sunlike star 950 light-years away called Kepler 20. One has dimensions almost identical to our own planet; the other is just 87 percent Earth's diameter. The planets, which by convention have been assigned the names Kepler 20 f and Kepler 20 e, respectively, are the smallest exoplanets for which diameters are known. Francois Fressin and Guillermo Torres of the Harvard?Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and their colleagues announced the discoveries in a paper published online December 20 in Nature. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)
"For the first time, we've crossed the threshold of finding Earth-size worlds," Torres says. "The next step is having an Earth-size planet in the habitable zone."
Tens of millions of kilometers from Earth, the Kepler spacecraft carries out a relatively simple task. It tracks the brightness of more than 150,000 stars, watching for them to dim repeatedly as a planet passes in front of a star's face. For a planet as small as Kepler 20 e, that dimming is incredibly subtle; every six days, when Kepler 20 e completes an orbit, the starlight dips to 99.992 percent of its regular flux for just a few hours.
By tracking how much of a star's light a planet blots out, astronomers can make a careful estimate of the body's diameter. For larger worlds, they can also make a complementary estimate of the planet's mass by using ground-based telescopes that measure how much of a wobble the planet's motion induces on its host star. Witnessing such a wobble also confirms the presence of a real planet, as opposed to some other astrophysical phenomenon that causes regular fluctuations in a star's brightness. (One planet-mimicking phenomenon is a binary star system behind one of Kepler's target stars; when one member of the binary eclipses the other it causes a temporary dimming that can be mistakenly ascribed to the foreground star.)
But such mass measurements are not currently possible for planets as diminutive as Kepler 20 e and Kepler 20 f. So Torres and his colleagues used a relatively new software technique called Blender, which calculates the likelihood that what Kepler sees is caused by a planet. They concocted a range of false-positive scenarios to determine how many could produce the observed signal. With help from NASA's Pleiades supercomputer, the researchers analyzed close to a billion different scenarios, Torres says. The analysis found that Kepler 20 e is 3,400 times more likely to be a planet than a false positive; the planet-to-fake-out ratio for Kepler 20 f is 1,370.
Those numbers make a solid case for both objects as genuine planets. But in the absence of a measurement of the planets' masses, their compositions remain unknown. Given the comparable dimensions of both newfound planets and Earth, a similar composition of silicate and iron is a possibility for either world, the researchers say.

Italy's Monti faces confidence vote on austerity (Reuters)
ROME (Reuters) ? Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti's government won a parliamentary confidence vote on its austerity package on Friday.
The Chamber of Deputies approved the 33-billion euro ($43- billion) package of tax rises and spending cuts by 495 votes to 88.
It now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to be approved before Christmas, probably with another confidence vote.
