Oscars Red Carpet: Emma Stone And Rooney Mara Dazzle

Our experts pick the best-dressed at the 2012 Academy Awards.

Oscar night isn't only a huge event for the world of movies; it's also a big night for fashion. Over the years, it has become known as the hottest runway show of the year, with the top designers clamoring to get their dresses on the night's nominees, hoping to win a spot on the coveted best-dressed list.

On Sunday night, all eyes were on the actresses working the red carpet, and they did not disappoint. There were pops of color on the carpet, but the big trend of the night seemed to be ladies in white. Gwyneth Paltrow looked glamorous in a white one-shoulder Tom Ford gown with a matching wrap.

MTV Style picks their best-dressed at the Oscars.

"From what I saw walking down the carpet, Gwyneth Paltrow looked amazing in Tom Ford," Janell Snowden of VH1 told MTV News. "She was in the color of the night, which was white."

Rooney Mara, a Best Actress nominee for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," traded in her typical black garb for elegant white, wearing a lace Givenchy gown with a plunging back.

"I did think a lot about what I was going to wear; it's a long process," Mara told MTV News. "I like to wear white also. I wanted to mix it up. This just happened to be the most beautiful dress, that's why I wore it."

MTV Style expert Mary H.K. Choi agreed that Mara wowed in her Oscar ensemble. "White was a huge trend on the red carpet tonight, and this stark, architectural Givenchy looked absolutely surreal against the phosphorescence of her alabaster skin," Choi said. "She looked just pristine, and the fact that her impossibly shiny, jet-black hair was in a tight bun with blunt bangs really anchored the look. She dresses with a certain severity, given her young age, but I'm a huge fan."

Of course, it wasn't just the ladies in white who stole the show. "The Help" star Emma Stone turned heads in a stunning red Giambattista Valli gown.

"I just loved this dress. There were titterings on Twitter about how people either loved or hated the bow, but I thought a dramatic, festive accent at the neckline looked stunning and complemented the side sweep of her red hair," Choi said. "A risk, definitely, but I think it absolutely paid off."

Stone's co-star Jessica Chastain also made a lasting impression on her first Oscar red carpet. Chastain, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, shined on the carpet in a black and gold Alexander McQueen gown.

"This is a big moment — probably it's the biggest moment of my life — so I needed a dress that was a big-moment dress," Chastain told MTV News. "It's McQueen, and the embroidery and the way it fits — to me, this dress is how I'm feeling right now."

PFT: Cards leaving door wide open for Peyton

Robert Griffin IIIAP

Robert Griffin III stepped up to the podium at the Combine Friday, surveyed the massive throng of reporters getting in position, and whispered under his breath, ?It?s really official now.?

With a microphone nearby, even that comment was audible to those in the front few rows. Everything Griffin says and does over the next decade is going to be scrutinized. It?s hard to imagine another young man more ready for the responsibility.

It?s only a press conference, but Griffin couldn?t have been more impressive, comfortable, intelligent, and funny on Friday. Press conferences are part of the gig to being an NFL quarterback. Teams like the Browns, Redskins, and Dolphins have to be excited about trying to make Griffin the face of their franchise.

?I hope somebody falls in love with me ? other than my fianc?e,? Griffin said when asked about the Browns possibly ?falling in love? with him.

Some highlights from the session:

1. Griffin won?t throw at the Combine, just his Pro Day.

2.?He wore Ninja Turtle socks Friday. Naturally.

3. On playing a lot of out of the shotgun: ?It?s not the traditional spread where we?re playing out of shotgun all the time. Although we are in shotgun a lot. So was Tom Brady and Eli Manning in the Super Bowl, but that?s beside the point.?

4. The Eagles met with Griffin Thursday night. He will meet with the Chiefs and Browns Friday night. He mentioned the Browns and Redskins as West Coast offenses he could fit in. Griffin said it would be ?an honor to play the Browns.?

5. On possibly playing for the Colts: ?I?ve talked to Peyton a few times. It?d be amazing for him to play out his career here ? and to play behind him. . . .?It would be an honor to sit back and learn. I?d hold that clipboard with pride.?

6. On suggestions the Baylor offense is simple: ?I?d like to sit down with those folks and show how simple it is. It?s not a simple offense. It?s a great offense. It?s a quarterback friendly offense, but simple would not be the word to describe it.?

Great Books for Kids and Teens: Teen/YA Review: The Girls of No ...

Erin Saldin?s debut novel, The Girls of No Return, caught my eye for several reasons: as an outdoor lover, I liked the idea of a book about a wilderness school for teen girls, and it sounded like it had some emotional depth to it.? My first impressions were correct, and I read this compelling novel in just a few short days.

At the start of the novel, it?s not entirely clear why Lida?s father and stepmother are sending her away to the Alice Marshall School for Girls, deep in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area, but it is obvious that she must have some serious emotional problems.? In fact, Lida holds her problems and her emotions very tightly inside her, even when all of the other girls at the wilderness school are beginning to share their feelings during Circle Share time.? As the girls hike, canoe, go to classes, and talk about their problems, Lida remains hesitant to let anyone in, so it is a big deal when the new, glamorous and mysterious girl, Gia, chooses Lida above all of the girls as her best friend.

All of the girls have their secrets, their Thing that landed them at Alice Marshall in the first place. With Gia, Lida finally begins to open up and share some of what she is feeling, but it makes her increasingly uncomfortable that Gia doesn?t seem to reciprocate.? Meanwhile, there are other girls who would like to befriend Lida, but she doesn?t want to let them in; it is clear she has been badly hurt in the past.? The tension builds to the exciting climax when it is time for the girls to go on their solo overnight backpacking trip.

I really enjoyed this book about teen girls facing their inner demons. The wilderness setting is unique and each of the girls has a distinctive personality and past. I found it engaging, suspenseful, and interesting, and I look forward to reading more from Erin Saldin.

New physical phenomenon could drastically reduce energy consumption by computers

This release is available in German.

Three years ago Professor Christian Pfleiderer and his team from the physics department at the TUM discovered an entirely new magnetic structure in a silicon manganese crystal a grid of magnetic eddies. Together with the team of Professor Achim Rosch from the University of Cologne, he studied the properties of these eddies, so-called skyrmions, named after the British physicist Tony Skyrme, who predicted their existence 50 years ago. They were expecting results in the field of so-called spintronics, nano-electric components that utilize not only the electric charge of electrons for processing information, but also their magnetic momentum, known as spin.

While Peter Grnberg and Albert Fert received the Nobel Prize in 2007 for work on significantly faster data readout, research today concentrates on the question of how magnetic information can be written directly to materials via electric current. However, the extremely strong electric currents required produce side effects, which are practically untamable, even in nano-structures. Since skyrmions can be moved with 100,000 times less current, interest has been aroused in both the scientific community and in industry.

Although magnetic eddies were discovered in silicon manganese it was clear that it would not remain the only material capable of generating skyrmions. This has turned out to be true. Meanwhile, Japanese researchers have proven that individual eddies can be generated, and a group of physicists from the Research Center Jlich, as well as the Universities of Hamburg and Kiel, provided evidence that magnetic eddies can be generated on surfaces. They managed to build a data bit out of only 15 atoms. By way of comparison, a magnetic bit on a common hard drive requires about one million atoms.

Yet, writing, updating and reading out information remained a problem. So far, Professor Pfleiderer's team has resorted to neutron radiation from the neighboring research reactor FRM II at the TU Muenchen to study the materials. "We can just take the crystals generated in our laboratory at the physics department, walk over there and use the neutrons to measure the magnetic structure, its dynamics and many other properties," said Christian Pfleiderer.

Using neutron radiation, the scientists were able to prove that even the tiniest of currents are sufficient to move the magnetic eddies. Now the physicists have developed a method by which skyrmions can be moved and measured in a purely electronic manner. "When the electric eddies move in a material, they generate an electric field", said Christian Pfleiderer. "And that is something we can measure directly with electronic equipment available in our laboratory."

At present a current is used in the read/write head of a hard drive to generate a magnetic field in order to magnetize a spot on the hard drive and thus write a data bit. Skyrmions, in contrast, can be moved directly and that with very small currents. "This should make saving and processing data much more compact and energy-efficient," said Christian Pfleiderer.

However, the measurement of this phenomenon still depends on very low temperatures. The European Research Council is currently funding a project with the aim of developing new materials that will permit the use of skyrmions at room temperature. But there is a lot of research work yet to be done before the first electronic components based on this technology reach the market.

(AP) ? A grandson of the late Princess Grace of Monaco has been briefly hospitalized after a brawl in a New York City nightclub.

Prince Pierre Casiraghi (cah-zee-RAH'-ghee) suffered cuts to his face during the brawl. Former nightclub owner Adam Hock was arraigned Sunday on charges of assaulting the prince and three friends at the Double Seven nightspot in Manhattan's Meatpacking District.

An attorney who represents the 24-year-old prince tells The Associated Press that Casiraghi was treated at a hospital and released after Saturday's brawl. Attorney Richard Golub says Casiraghi's group did not "instigate anything" or provoke the attack.

But Hock tells the New York Post (http://nyp.st/A9kKG1 ) the prince and his entourage "were being completely obnoxious," verbally abusing women with him.

Also punched in the melee was shipping heir Stavros Niarchos III.

DOL releases updated FMLA forms with 2015 expiration date ...

Even after the start of 2012, the model FMLA certification and notification forms provided by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) still carried an expriation date of Dec. 31, 2011. In those first few weeks of the year, the DOL said employers could continue to use those outdated forms.

But now the DOL has released new updated forms that won?t expire for three more years. These new forms carry an expiration date of Feb. 28, 2015 in the upper right corner.? Employers can use these DOL forms directly in their organizations, or they can use the forms as models and create their own versions.

These ?updated? versions, however, did not include any substantive changes, only the expiration date. That was somewhat of a surprise because the DOL did not use this opportunity to fix a pair of key shortcomings on their FMLA forms. Those shortcomings (which will likely be addressed in newly updated FMLA forms released later in 2012) include:

1) Any references to the additional FMLA rights provided under the 2010 amendments for military family leave.

2) Any reference to the ?safe harbor? privacy language required under the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA). The law says that employers who request medical certifications from employees must instruct health care providers not to collect or provide any genetic information about the person.

For that reason, it?s wise to add language to your FMLA medical certification forms. The EEOC has suggested that employers add this language to any form that requests health-related information from their employees:

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA) prohibits employers and other entities covered by GINA Title II from requesting or requiring genetic information of an individual or family member of the individual, except as specifically allowed by this law. To comply with this law, we are asking that you not provide any genetic information when responding to this request for medical information. ?Genetic information,? as defined by GINA, includes an individual?s family medical history, the results of an individual?s or family member?s genetic tests, the fact that an individual or an individual?s family member sought or received genetic services, and genetic information of a fetus carried by an individual or an individual?s family member or an embryo lawfully held by an individual or family member receiving assistive reproductive services.

If you provide this type of warning and follow the other GINA rules,, the EEOC says, ?any genetic information the entity acquires will be considered inadvertent.? Thus, this wording attached to your FMLA forms helps create a ?safe harbor? for employers.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents to the annual Angies List project poll say theyre going to tackle aesthetic changes to their homes this year. Highly rated real estate agents on Angies List say the most popular of these small projects will be painting.

Painting projects can be great steps for the first time do-it-yourselfer, but they can also be a lot more complicated than you might initially think, said Angies List Founder Angie Hicks. If your project is going to involve a ladder or complicated patterns, it might be worth your while to bring in a professional.

Whether youre thinking of painting the outside of your home, a small room or a few rooms in your house, Hicks said homeowners need to think before they pry open the cans.

Painting can be fun and affordable, but theres a lot of prep work that you dont always see on those decorating shows, Hicks said. Make sure you know what youre getting yourself into.

For advice, Hicks went to painters who had earned high grades from Angies List members. The most common bit of advice was to stick with well-recognized brands because the better the paint, the longer it will last. Well established paint manufacturers also are more likely to have an array of compatible accent colors and have readily available stock.

Warner Bros. Still Mulling I Am Legend Prequel

Deadline reports that Arash Amel was given the task of writing the screenplay for a new I Am Legend movie for Warner Bros.

The new movie was previously rumored to be a prequel since, you know, Will Smith's character apparently died at the end of the 2007 movie, but Deadline says WB is no longer using that term to describe the movie.

Regardless of which direction the movie will go, WB would probably like to have Will Smith back to reprise his role since it makes their job of marketing the movie that much easier.

At this point, neither Will Smith nor Francis Lawrence, the director of the 2007 movie, are attached to the movie.

Arash Amel wrote the script for the forthcoming thriller The Expatriate starring Aaron Eckhart as an ex-CIA agent who his former employer wants dead.

Based on Richard Matheson's novel of the same name, the 2007 movie, I Am Legend, stars Will Smith as a man who is immune to a virus that transform humans into flesh-eating creatures. He tries to find a cure for this pandemic before time runs out for him.

The movie was generally well received by critics, garnering a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes, and made $585 million worldwide on a budget of $150 million.

Matheson's novel was previously adapted in 1964 as The Last Man on Earth and again in 1971 as The Omega Man.

Will Smith can be seen next in Sony's Men in Black 3 on May 25, 2012.

Watch Out for Motorcycles Quick Cash Auto Blog - Automotive News ...

While this blog mainly focuses on cars, trucks, SUVs and more, it?s important to mention another vehicle that is often found on many roadways: the motorcycle. While it may be easy to pass motorcycle operators off as less important, the fact is, motorcycle operators are entitled to the same rights and subject to many of the same traffic laws as everyone else. In fact, some states have even enacted certain laws to protect motorcyclists from accidents and injury.

One of the most important times to watch out for motorcyclists is during inclement weather. If you operate a traditional automobile, you?ll typically be able to drive in these conditions with the benefit of a windshield, heat and four wheels of traction and control. Unfortunately, motorcyclists don?t have these luxuries, and many of them are subject to the elements. As a result, motorcyclists may not have the visibility you do while on the road, meaning automobile drivers need to always be watching out for quick lane switches, slower speeds and more.

Another reason to watch out for motorcyclists is speed. A motorcycle will typically be able to gain higher acceleration speeds when compared to a traditional vehicle, but braking speeds may differ. A four-wheeled vehicle has the added benefit of more tires, all of which assist it in stopping. A motorcycle, on the other hand, usually only employs brakes on one wheel. Because of the balance of a motorcycle, this can make it harder to bring to a safe and complete stop, meaning vehicle operators need to be aware of motorcycles in front of them, behind them and at intersections.

Due to their smaller size, motorcycles may also be harder to see. While passing vehicles on a busy highway, you may miss a motorcycle in the non-passing lane, potentially causing an accident. The best advice to avoid such an accident is to always pay attention to your surroundings when driving, and drive at the speed limit or slower. Because most motorcycles only employ one headlight, drivers need to also watch out for motorcycle safety at night. If a motorcycle only has one headlight, it may appear as a four-wheel vehicle with one headlight in the dark of night, causing other drivers to misjudge their distance.

Legally, motorcycle operators may have different rules and laws to follow, depending upon the state in which they are operating. If you are a motorcycle operator, or if you?re concerned about motorcycle safety, please take some time to research the laws in your area to ensure safe and efficient roadways.

What's Happening with Shady Canyon Real Estate? - Irvine Real ...

Since I am most interested in helping those in the market for the low- to mid-level priced housing, those are the Irvine homes that I will take the closest look at in my posts. However, now and then, a look at how the other half (Or is that the one percent?) live is interesting. So it?s on to a look at housing in Shady Canyon.

Any of you who are familiar with Irvine real estate know that Shady Canyon is Irvine?s most expensive neighborhood. According to Redin, 25 Shady Canyon homes are currently on the market (however, a savvy real estate agent might know of some others that are available but not listed). The median list price of these homes is $5,980,000 or $725 per square foot.? Redfin stats show that no Shady Canyon homes sold in December 2011, but 5 homes sold in January 2012. The median selling price for these 5 homes was $2,670,000 or $534 per square foot.

Shady Canyon Price/SF courtesy Redfin

All the homes in Shady Canyon are single family, and not just single-family but mega single-family abodes. The 5-bedroom, 7.5 home at 66 Golden Eagle with 10,500 square feet is an example. It?s listed for $7,945,000 or $757 per square foot.

The most expensive of Redfin?s Shady Canyon listings is the 6-bedroom, 10-bath home at 36 Boulder View. It?s listed for $14,999,000 or $1,531 per square foot. Redfin stats also show that this home was listed for $15,499,000 on March 4, 2010 as well as $13,995,000 on May 3, 2010. According to Zestimate, the value for this home has not increased or decreased during the last 30 days. However, Zestimate lists the current value of this home at $12,748,200.

If that is too expensive for you, then you might be interested in Shady Canyon?s least expensive home. The 6-bedroom, 6.5-bath home at 26 Vernal Spring is listed at only $2,988,000 or $572 per square foot. What a steal! According to Redfin, this home was listed for $3,088,000 on November 16, 2011, and according to Zestimate, the value of 26 Vernal Spring has decreased by $32,700 in the last 30 days. The current Zestimate is $2,500,600.?

If you want to take a look at some of this Shady Canyon real estate, the following homes will be hosting open houses in the near future:

  • 55 Vernal Spring: Saturdays and Sundays, February 18, February 19, February 25, February 26; 1-4 pm
  • 25 Needle Grass: Saturday and Sunday, February 18, February 19; 1-4 pm
  • 53 Boulder: Saturday and Sunday, February 25, February 26; 1-4 pm

Before we leave the high-end housing market, let?s take a look at how the wider Orange County high-end market is faring.

According to Jon Lansner and colleagues:
?Just four of the 83 Orange County ZIP codes had median sales prices above $1 million in the 22 business days ending Jan.11. ?That?s quite a drop from 11 ZIP codes that had median sales prices above $1 million when the county median price peaked in June 2007. Since that pricing pinnacle, there?s been a 38 percent drop in the countywide median price.??ZIPs above $1 million mark drop, The Orange County Register

Note: Since Irvine?s ZIP codes contain many different neighborhoods with different pricing levels, I focused on the Shady Canyon neighborhood instead of its ZIP code (92603).The 92603 ZIP code contains the Quail Hill, Turtle Rock, Turtle Ridge, and Shady Canyon neighborhoods. According to DataQuick Information Systems, the median price for homes in the 92603 ZIP code was $650,000 for the last 22 days ending in January 26, 2012. This is a 42.3% decrease from the 2010 price.

Well, looking at another slice of life was fun, but now it?s back to reality. In a future post, I will look at the other side of the equation by focusing on the Orange Tree neighborhood. Orange Tree contains some of Irvine?s least expensive homes.

In prostate cancer, other death risks may be higher (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Some men with prostate cancer may have increased risks of dying from causes other than the cancer itself, a new study finds.

Researchers found that when men had their prostate cancer diagnosed after developing symptoms -- and not after screening tests -- they had heightened risks of dying from heart problems or other cancers.

It's not clear what to make of the findings at this point. Mainly, they raise questions for future studies, said Dr. Anthony D'Amico, of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

"This is a study of associations, and does not prove cause-and-effect. It's really hypothesis-generating," said D'Amico, who was not involved in the research.

One possibility, according to the study authors, is that hormonal therapy has something to do with the increased risk of heart disease death.

D'Amico agreed that could be a factor. A number of studies, he told Reuters Health, have suggested that hormonal therapy for prostate cancer could raise the risk of heart disease death.

But, D'Amico added, that link has only been seen in men with a history of heart disease going into the therapy.

SCREENING VS. USUAL CARE

The findings, reported in the British Journal of Urology International, are based on a subgroup of men who took part in a European clinical trial on prostate cancer screening.

The men, who were ages 55 to 74, were randomly assigned to either undergo periodic prostate cancer screening or be part of a control group that stuck with "usual" health care.

The researchers followed death rates among 372 men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer through screening, comparing them with 1,488 men who'd been screened but found cancer-free.

They also followed 221 men in the usual-care group who'd been diagnosed with prostate cancer after developing symptoms. Those men were compared with 884 men from the control group who had not been diagnosed with the cancer.

Looking at that latter group, the researchers found that men with prostate cancer were more likely to die from cardiovascular disease or other types of cancer over the next six years.

Just under 12 percent died of cancers other than prostate tumors, versus 7 percent of men who had not been diagnosed with prostate cancer. And 5 percent died of heart disease or stroke, compared with just over 3 percent of other men.

In contrast, men who'd had their prostate cancer caught through screening showed no increased risk of death compared with men free of prostate cancer.

OFTEN SLOW-GROWING

Prostate cancer screening, such as with PSA blood tests, often catches very early tumors that may or may not be life-threatening. Prostate cancer is often slow-growing, and may never progress to the point of being lethal.

But when men are diagnosed because they've developed symptoms (like problems passing urine and low back pain), the cancer is often at a more-advanced stage.

For those men, one treatment option is hormonal therapy to lower a man's levels of testosterone, which can fuel prostate tumors' growth.

Several studies have linked the therapy to higher-than-normal risks of cardiovascular "events," like blood clots or heart attacks, or death from heart complications.

In this study, 27 percent of men diagnosed with prostate cancer based on symptoms ended up having hormonal therapy, according to the researchers, led by Dr. Pim J. van Leeuwen of Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.

So, they say, hormonal therapy might help explain the increased risk rate of death from cardiovascular problems.

D'Amico agreed that that's a possibility, and called it the most "interesting" point from the findings.

As for the increased rate of death from other cancers, D'Amico speculated that men with more-aggressive prostate cancer may be genetically vulnerable to other cancers as well.

Or, he added, being part of a medical study may have meant they were more likely to have screening tests for other cancers.

For now, the reasons for the findings are unclear. "This is not something that would change clinical practice," D'Amico said.

Like with any treatment for prostate cancer, experts say the risks of hormone therapy have to be weighed against the potential benefits. For men with "high-risk" cancer that is likely to progress, for example, studies have shown that a combination of hormonal therapy and radiation can boost survival.

Men with early prostate cancer diagnosed through screening would not be the ones given hormone therapy, D'Amico said.

For those men, surgery may be an option -- and so may "active surveillance." That means putting off treatment altogether and monitoring the cancer over time.

According to the National Cancer Institute, about half of the more than 190,000 U.S. men diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009 fell into the "low-risk" category -- meaning their cancer had low odds of progressing.

(AP) ? The Detroit Red Wings were businesslike about breaking an NHL record with their 21st straight win at home.

The Red Wings tapped their gloves and sticks on goaltender Joey MacDonald after beating the Dallas Stars 3-1 Tuesday night as if it was just another victory.

Then, they skated toward center ice and raised their sticks to acknowledge the cheering fans ? a rare gesture ? before going back to their usual routine of working up another sweat with a postgame workout.

"It was nothing different in here after the game," captain Nicklas Lidstrom said.

Detroit's fans, and media that covers the franchise, has made a much bigger deal about the record than coach Mike Babcock or any of his players.

"I'm proud of the guys, they've worked hard ? and now let's get on with it," Babcock said.

Red-and-white clad fans, though, wanted to soak up the moment and celebrate a team they haven' seen lose at home in more than three months.

During the final minute of the latest win at Joe Louis Arena, the crowd showered the Red Wings with a standing ovation ? and chanted, "21! 21!"

"In the end when they were really cheering, before and after the buzzer went, it was a pretty cool feeling," forward Henrik Zetterberg said.

The Red Wings surpassed the single-season mark of 20 straight home wins set by Boston in the 1929-30 season and matched by Philadelphia in 1976.

They did it pretty easily against the Stars.

Zetterberg and Brad Stuart scored midway through the first period and Detroit coasted the rest of the game.

Detroit extended the streak with three wins in shootouts, which became a part of the league in 2005 after the lockout and has led some to downplay the significance of this record.

In the past, the Red Wings would've had to settle for ties and an unbeaten streak instead of a winning run.

"There's really no way to combat that argument," Stuart said. "But still, it's an incredible accomplishment regardless of what you're going to compare it to."

Since the shootout eliminated ties, the longest previous home winning streak was 14 by Boston during the 2008-09 season. Detroit's run began after a loss to Calgary on Nov. 3.

Adam Burish, who scored for Dallas, said what the Red Wings have done isn't watered down by the fact they have chances to win games that used to end in ties.

"I think it's harder than it was in the 70s, just because of the parity," Burish said. "There are no games where you can just show up and think you're going to win."

Detroit has an NHL-high 39 wins and 80 points, but the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers are just a point behind and have played three fewer games.

"Anytime you're in a race like we are, you need the points," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said.

The resurgent St. Louis Blues, steady Nashville Predators and talented Chicago Blackhawks won't make it easy for the Red Wings to win the Central Division, and top seeding in the West will likely be closely contested with the defending conference champion Vancouver Canucks.

That is why the Red Wings have been more focused on the standings than the streak.

"It's something we're going to cherish, but we've talked about getting more points to stay where we are in the standings," captain Nicklas Lidstrom said.

MacDonald made 20 saves, filling in again for the injured Jimmy Howard, and was 32.8 seconds away from his third NHL shutout.

Kari Lehtonen stopped 34 shots for the Stars.

The Red Wings' next two games are at home ? Friday against Nashville, and Sunday when they host San Jose. That will give them a chance to break another record by the Bruins.

Boston won 22 straight home games, spanning two seasons. The Bruins closed the 1929-30 season with 20 victories at home and then won its first two in Boston the following season.

"That's something I didn't know of, but we'll refocus again and go to work again for Friday," Lidstrom said.

The NBA's longest home winning streak in a season is 37, set by Chicago during the 1995-96 season. The 1978 Pittsburgh Pirates and 1988 Boston Red Sox both won 24 straight at home for baseball's longest single-season, home-winning streaks since 1919. The Miami Dolphins won 27 straight at home from 1971-74 for the NFL mark.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said before Tuesday's game that the team wouldn't make room for a banner in Joe Louis Arena's crowded rafters if a record was set against Dallas.

Holland said the club can hoist four banners each season for winning the Stanley Cup, the Presidents' Trophy, and Western Conference and Central Division titles.

Detroit hopes it doesn't follow the path of the last two teams to win 20 straight at home.

The Bruins eight-plus decades ago and the Flyers nearly 36 years ago were defending Stanley Cup champions and went on to lose in the finals.

Detroit essentially finished off Dallas in the first half of the opening period.

"We started on time," Babcock said. "I actually thought their goaltender was really good. Without him it could have been worse.

"If you can play with the lead, you're always a better team," Babcock said.

NOTES: The Red Wings are shooting for Howard to return on Sunday. Howard has missed six games with a broken right index finger. ... Dallas, which is not among the top eight teams in the West, has lost three straight after winning four of six.
