Climate change to fuel northern spread of avian malaria, study finds

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Malaria has been found in birds in parts of Alaska, and global climate change will drive it even farther north, according to a new study published today in the journal PLOS ONE.

The spread could prove devastating to arctic bird species that have never encountered the disease and thus have no resistance to it, said San Francisco State University Associate Professor of Biology Ravinder Sehgal, one of the study's co-authors. It may also help scientists understand the effects of climate change on the spread of human malaria, which is caused by a similar parasite.

Researchers examined blood samples from birds collected at four sites of varying latitude, with Anchorage as a southern point, Denali and Fairbanks as middle points and Coldfoot as a northern point, roughly 600 miles north of Anchorage. They found infected birds in Anchorage and Fairbanks but not in Coldfoot.

Using satellite imagery and other data, researchers were able to predict how environments will change due to global warming -- and where malaria parasites will be able to survive in the future. They found that by 2080, the disease will have spread north to Coldfoot and beyond.

"Right now, there's no avian malaria above latitude 64 degrees, but in the future, with global warming, that will certainly change," Sehgal said. The northerly spread is alarming, he added, because there are species in the North American arctic that have never been exposed to the disease and may be highly susceptible to it.

"For example, penguins in zoos die when they get malaria, because far southern birds have not been exposed to malaria and thus have not developed any resistance to it," he said. "There are birds in the north, such as snowy owls or gyrfalcons, that could experience the same thing."

The study's lead author is Claire Loiseau, a former postdoctoral fellow in Sehgal's laboratory at SF State. Ryan Harrigan, a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles, provided data modeling for the project. The research was funded by grants from the AXA Foundation and National Geographic.

Researchers are still unsure how the disease is being spread in Alaska and are currently collecting additional data to determine which mosquito species are transmitting the Plasmodium parasites that cause malaria.

The data may also indicate if and how malaria in humans will spread northward. Modern medicine makes it difficult to track the natural spread of the disease, Sehgal said, but monitoring birds may provide clues as to how global climate change may effect the spread of human malaria.

"First evidence and predictions of Plasmodium transmission in Alaskan bird populations" was written by Claire Loiseau, Ryan J. Harrigan, Anthony K. Cornel, Sue L. Guers, Molly Dodge, Timothy Marzec, Jenny S. Carlson, Bruce Seppi and Ravinder N. M. Sehgal and published Sept. 19 in PLoS ONE.

Louie, Season 3

120920_TVC_louie

Louie tests out his late-night desk

FX.

The writers of Seinfeld famously subscribed to a four-word philosophy when it came to structuring storylines: ?No hugging, no learning.? This scorched-earth attitude toward third-act sentimentality is one of many reasons Seinfeld was such a refreshing and revolutionary television comedy. By contrast, Louis C.K., who grew audibly, affectingly verklempt while discussing his love for his daughters on Marc Maron?s podcast a few years back, clearly believes there?s a place for sentimentality on his own revolutionary show, and despite a cameo from Jerry himself, there was hugging and learning galore in tonight?s show.

This was a tremendous episode, but there were times when it threatened to buckle under the weight of tender moments that C.K. handled, I felt, with insufficient tenderness: his soft spot for his daughters risks functioning, on occasion, as a blind spot. Perhaps it?s because I?m a childless child of Seinfeld, my frosty heart beating to a more Larry Davidian drummer, but I groaned when C.K. dropped those melancholy, now-ubiquitous piano notes after Jane?s ?When will you see us?? and when he dropped them again after Lilly told Louie, later on, ?We know you can do it.? One, two, three: Be moved. I wouldn?t have rubbed that emotional highlighter across Hadley Delany?s already well-read line, and I would have cut Lilly?s words of encouragement outright, because the girls? ?Dad Night Live? drawing had already done the job with greater power and simplicity. C.K. has proven himself a master of tone-juggling on this series, but tonight, treading the line between sweet and cloying?a game, admittedly, of centimeters?there were distracting, intrusive moments when he overstepped.

Not always, though. When Louie, about to storm out of Jack Dall?s office in frustration, stopped himself, let his armor fall, confessed his hopes and fears, and launched into his belly-rubbing penis parade dance, I cheered the ludicrous gameness of the gesture and the complexity of the writing behind it. Last week, Louie was up against some highly unhelpful helpers in Jack and Alphonse, but tonight the biggest obstacle to a breakthrough was clearly Louie himself, as he tried to suss out where artistic integrity stops and stubborn pridefulness begins. We saw this at play when he told Jack, ?I?m not that kind of funny,? after Jack commanded, ?Make me laugh?go.? Comedians rightly hate it when people, in civilian life, away from the stage, treat them like trained monkeys, and so part of what we were seeing was justifiable resentment on Louie?s part. Except this isn?t civilian life, it?s the Late Show. Being funny on a dime, as Jack knows, is part of the job description. Unless you?re Tom Snyder.?

What fine work from Lynch this week. He preserved the off-kilter rhythms of last week (?Interviews!?) and got off some excellent laugh lines (?That?s short for champion?), but also added a strain of eccentric-paternalistic tough-love and, in his final moments on screen, a winning hint of pathos, as he explained that if Louie got the gig, CBS would bring in ?a younger producer.? With that line, we see that Jack isn?t a player or gatekeeper so much as an antique, all but left on the curb for collection. Contrast him to this arc?s other grandfatherly grayhair with a beautiful big desk, Garry Marshall?s CBS chairman: As old white men, both characters are emblems of entrenched power, but Jack, for all his contentiousness, goes out and gets beautiful suits tailored for his charges and calls them ?Buster,? while the chairman turns out to be a callous puppeteer, his rousing speech to Louie, in point of fact, a cruel con.

We can widen this ?penis parade? of powerful papas to include two others?the unseen Louie Sr. from ?Dad,? and the unseen David Letterman, installed high above the Ed Sullivan theater. Louie ran from his dad?s doorstep. Here he stands on Letterman?s and screams, euphorically, ?Fuck you!?

I?ll leave it to you both to get into Louie?s (qualified) triumph. Not only did his test show seem pretty good, but it also seemed?improbably?plausible. Louie wore that suit damn well, and his comedic sensibility, adapted to a network talk show, would look a lot like meta-jokes about teleprompters and Susan Sarandon jerk-off confessions, wouldn?t it?

Noteshelf (for iPad)

If you're going to use an iPad for work or school, you need a note-taking app (or two) that meet your needs and that you enjoy using. If you find an app that offers all the bells and whistles you think you need, but you dread launching the darn thing, you won't use it. The iPad app Noteshelf ($5.99) gets more than halfway there on both accounts, but doesn't quite follow through and deliver everything an avid note taker might need, nor deliver it in a package that you'd necessarily want to look at day in and day out.

Signature Features
Noteshelf offers three signature features. First, it organizes notes into visual notebooks, which sit on a shelf that looks stunningly similar to Apple's iBooks app. If you like the idea of seeing your notes in a book, which you can title and design, this feature may help you keep track of your notes. It's really a more of a design trick than anything else, seeing as most note-taking apps give you some kind of mechanism for sorting or organizing notes?it's just that they're not always visual.

Second, Noteshelf supports not only handwriting and sketching, but also typed text, which not all note-taking apps do.

Third, this note-taking app has a well designed zoom tool, which serious note-takers know is a necessity for handwritten and sketched notes on the iPad. Touch-screen writing tends to get sloppy without it.

While these three signature features do create a decent foundation for Noteshelf, none of them are unique. For example, Penultimate uses the same visual notebook method of organization as Noteshelf, but costs one-sixth of the price. Penultimate, however, was specifically designed to handle handwriting and sketching and does not even include a keyboard in the app. Our favorite iPad note-taking app overall has been Note Taker HD? (4.5 stars and an Editors' Choice), and it allows for both typed text and sketching or handwritten text. It also has a zoom mode, and one that's just as good if not better than Noteshelf's. Note Taker HD comes with a few advantages over Noteshelf, too, which I'll explain in a moment.

Noteshelf's Shortcomings
With its signature features, Noteshelf seems like a capable enough note-taking application, but when I got down to actually using it, I found it to be missing a few critical components.

Like any well-rounded note-taking app, Noteshelf lets you import images, which you can paste into a note and mark up. Unfortunately, once you affix an image to a note, you can't select it to move it or crop it. The app doesn't have a pan tool at all (in the slideshow images, you may notice a hand icon, which is in fact a wrist protection feature and not the panning button it appears to be).

Without a pan tool or selection tool of some kind, it's next to impossible to move anything around the note page. Say you import an image, then mark it up with pen notes and highlighter marks. Now perhaps you'll add a text box to type a label for the image or additional notes about it. The note may start to get cluttered, and if you could only just shift some of the page elements a few inches this way or that, you could probably fit everything you want on the page. But in Noteshelf, you can't easily drag page elements to a new place.

I hinted earlier that Note Taker HD has a few advantages over Noteshelf, and the ability to more easily manipulate (crop, move) PDFs and images that you import is one. Another is support for left-handed people.

While I don't want to have unrealistic expectations for an iPad app, I did notice that Noteshelf flattens your notes immediately?meaning if you import an image, mark it up, and then go to erase one of your marks, you'll also be erasing the image that's beneath the marks. I really wouldn't expect to see layering enabled on a simple mobile note-taking app, and Noteshelf actually does get around this problem by supporting multiple undos. So you can erase or you can hit undo.

Penultimate, you'll remember, does not have any typed text support whatsoever, but one thing it has that Noteshelf doesn't is a "clear page" button. In Noteshelf, if you want o clear a note page entirely, you'll have to select the eraser button and rub the entire screen (or hit undo as many times as it takes).

Which App to Choose?
If your notes will include a mix of typed text and handwritten or sketched notes, I'd recommend Note Taker HD over Noteshelf. It costs a dollar less and has more. If you don't need to include typed notes, I would suggest going with the 99-cent app Penultimate.

One-size-fits-all school accountability in Texas ? RIP? | Opinion Blog

We?ve heard one thing from a lot of legislative candidates this year ? ease up on mandates from Austin and let local school districts do their jobs. Call it a strong drift, especially from Republicans.

Now comes an announcement from new TEA Commissioner Michael Williams that he?s inviting high-performing districts ? including eight in North Texas ? to help develop the next generation of ?standards, assessments and accountability systems.?

Translation: These districts have earned the right for latitude from the state?s cookie-cutter assessment system.

Many of these same districts are members of a local group named the North Texas Regional Consortium. The group jumped into the fray over centralized education dictates earlier this year, saying that high-stakes standardized testing is ?strangling our public schools.? I?d say politicians are listening to the political muscle from the suburbs. Good.

Do not confuse this with our newspaper?s editorial policy ? which is crazy about testing and wants new edicts from Austin on teacher evaluations. The position is motivated largely by the mess in the dysfunctional Dallas district, and I get our anxiety.

But we should not confuse Dallas? needs with Highland Park?s or Coppell?s needs.

Why should the state impose the same routines on successful campuses and districts as it does for ones in constant distress and failure? That makes no sense, and I feel the approach may be coming to a stop.

One caveat on Williams? list: Not all these districts are what I would call high-performing, but that?s another conversation.

We can?t proclaim the three-decade-long experiment with standardized testing a success. Witness TAB chief Bill Hammond?s thundering sermon today in the Texas Tribune about how crummy Texas schools are. Agreed. The numbers stink, overall. But why argue to stay the course? The state should let truly high-performers use more of their resources building on success, rather than force them to keep concentrating on the low bar set for the laggards.

What concerns me is the way Hammond addresses ?Texas local school bureaucrats.? Which ones? I hope not the superintendents whose districts enjoy high property values because of the quality of their schools.

(Actually, the slap is undoubtedly a reference to the 787 school districts whose boards have passed resolutions expressing concern over high-stakes testing. It?s an odd list, really, since it includes Dallas ISD, which just hired a new sheriff, superintendent Mike Miles, who?s big on using test scores to rate teachers.)

I wasn?t sure I was going to like Commissioner Williams, but I like this move. It challenges convention. It allows for differences. It encourages creativity.

I hope it resists some of faddish thinking that crummy schools could leap and bound ahead if only they?re pressured into buying the latest testing and evaluation products off the shelf. That?s looking for a silver bullet and helping corporate interests cash in on distress. (It also ignores some of the cautionary research about the in-vogue ?value added model? of teacher evaluation.)

DO NOT assume there?s no profit motive in the so-called ?school reform? movement.

Public schools are among the most cherished of Democratic institutions in this nation, and local communities ought to have the strongest say in how to run them.

Chad Johnson just cut a deal to keep his unemployed a$$ out of jail.

The former NFL star was arrested for domestic violence after head-butting Evelyn Lozada during an argument, but he's agreed to be placed on probation and complete extensive anger management counseling in exchange for a guilty or no contest plea.

That will keep him out of jail on the battery charge he's facing.

A hearing has been scheduled for tomorrow, during which a judge is expected to sign off on the plea bargain and make it official. Man, they wrapped this up quick.

Evelyn and Chad's divorce was finalized yesterday. They wed July 4. Not even six weeks later, she found a receipt for condoms in their car and lost her $h!t.

He allegedly head-butted her at that point, and was arrested; Evelyn filed for divorce, VH1 axed their show and the Miami Dolphins cut Chad loose within days.

Life's changed quite a bit for him in the last three months. Lots of free time for Madden now at least, despite the awkwardness of having to create himself.

Mikania micrantha, known as mile-a-minute weed or 'forest killer,' is an exotic, invasive species that spreads quickly, covering crops, smothering trees and rapidly altering the environment

TEMPE (Sept. 21, 2012) - It's called mile-a-minute weed or "forest killer." Mikania micrantha is an exotic, invasive species that spreads quickly, covering crops, smothering trees and rapidly altering the environment.

Researchers at Arizona State University are spearheading a four-year research project that will explore what factors cause people and the environment to be vulnerable to rapid environmental change, such as an invasion by Mikania. Study findings likely will serve as a harbinger of the future as humans increasingly experience abrupt, extreme conditions associated with climate change, said Sharon J. Hall, the study's co-principal investigator and Arizona State University School of Life Sciences associate professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

"There are many communities that have to deal with and adapt to rapid change. Mikania is just one example. We're looking at how social and ecological forces in communities make them more resistant or vulnerable to rapid environmental change," Hall said. "Mikania is considered one of the world's worst invader weeds, and it is having a significant impact on agriculture in India and China. If there are crop species, it will grow over them. It grows extremely fast, up and over trees, as quickly as three inches per day."

The study, "Feedbacks Between Human Community Dynamics and Socioecological Vulnerability in a Biodiversity Hotspot," examines how the social and natural ecosystem surrounding Chitwan National Park of Nepal is being threatened by invasive plant species. It is funded by a $1,449,521 grant from the Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems program of the National Science Foundation.

Researchers will conduct the study in an area covering approximately 20 square miles in forests surrounding Chitwan National Park, a protected area that is home to many endangered species, including Bengal tiger and one-horned rhinoceros. The park borders populous communities and forests that the people use in their daily lives.

The study will also examine what people are doing to spread Mikania and how the plant affects people's lives. Collaborators on the study include: Abigail York, co-principal investigator and ASU School of Human Evolution and Social Change assistant professor; Li An, San Diego State University; Dirgha Ghimire, University of Michigan; Jennifer Glick, ASU School of Social and Family Dynamics professor; and Sean Murphy, CABI, an international non-profit organization focused on solving agricultural and environmental problems through scientific expertise.

"What sets our research apart from most previous work on invasive species and human populations is that we are taking an integrated approach to examining the environment, people, and society at many different levels: individuals, households, landscapes, community governance organizations, and so-called 'non-family organizations' like marketplaces/stores, schools and employers," said Scott Yabiku, the study's principal investigator and ASU School of Social and Family Dynamics associate professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Researchers are integrating a holistic, use-inspired approach into their study by observing and documenting the problem, using experimentation to tease apart driving forces, and implementing an intervention to reduce the spread of the species throughout the 21 community forests that border Chitwan National Park. Examining how people affect the forest's health and how the forest affects resident's livelihood will vary from an individual level to how forest management groups are addressing the problem.

"Not only are we thoroughly studying the social and ecological system surrounding the Chitwan National Park, we will also conduct experiments that test if an educational intervention with community forest groups can slow the spread of invasive species," Yabiku said. "At the end of the project, we'll implement this intervention in all remaining forest groups in the study area in the hopes that it has an impact on the well-being of the forests that these people rely on."

Mikania is a challenging adversary that can regenerate from dropping a small piece onto the soil. Possible interventions that may be implemented include carefully bagging the plant before removing it from the forest. Another practice that bears examination is use of fire in forest management, as this activity creates a nutrient rich environment that may encourage the spread of Mikania.

Wolf mange part of nature's cycle, ecologists say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 9, 2012) ? Mange and viral diseases have a substantial, recurring impact on the health and size of reintroduced wolf packs living in Yellowstone National Park, according to ecologists.

Following the restoration of gray wolves to Yellowstone in 1996, researchers collected blood from the animals to monitor parasite-induced disease and death. They also tracked the wolves in each pack to follow their survival and allow additional data-gathering.

"Many invasive species flourish because they lack their native predators and pathogens, but in Yellowstone we restored a native predator to an ecosystem that had other canids present that were capable of sustaining a lot of infections in their absence," said Emily S. Almberg, graduate student in ecology, Penn State. "It's not terribly surprising that we were able to witness and confirm that there was a relatively short window in which the reintroduced wolves stayed disease-free."

The researchers found that within a year after the wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone, 100 percent of the wolves tested had at least one infection, but mange did not infect wolves living in the park until 2007.

"We can look at the biology of the diseases and predict which ones will come in first," said Peter J. Hudson, Willaman Professor of Biology and director of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, Penn State. "What was surprising was that so many diseases came in so fast, but those were the ones we expected to come in first. It wasn't really a sequence, they were almost there immediately. That's very interesting in itself. "

The diseases that infected the wolves quickly were all viral, including canine distemper and canine parvovirus -- both contractible through bodily secretions. Mange, however, is a skin infection, caused by scabies mites, that makes the wolves scratch and lose fur. An infected wolf can lose enough body heat in the winter to freeze to death. Mange is spread by direct contact with another mite-infected animal or by contact with the mites themselves, as they can survive away from a host for several days, depending on the temperature.

"Where did those diseases come from?" asked Hudson. "Most of them initially came from other canid species, like coyotes or foxes. Wolves are animals that disperse far and move around fast, and once the wolves were established the diseases were spread from pack to pack."

Almberg and Hudson tracked how quickly mange spread from pack to pack after the disease entered the population. The number of infected wolves in a pack did not affect the likelihood of a neighboring pack to contract mange, but distance was a factor -- for every six miles of distance between an infected pack and an uninfected pack, there was a 66 percent drop in risk for the uninfected pack. Some wolves and packs were not severely affected by mange, while other packs were decimated, the researchers report in the current issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.

In January 2007, Mollie's pack was the first in Yellowstone to show signs of mange infection. As of March 2011, they had recovered. The Druid pack, which had been one of the most stable and visible packs in the park, according to Almberg, started to show signs of mange in August 2009.

"It was in a very short amount of time that the majority of the animals [in Druid] became severely infected," Almberg said. "The majority of their hair was missing from their bodies and it hit them right in the middle of winter. The summer before it got really bad, we saw that many of the pups had mange."

The Druid pack was gone by the end of the winter in 2010.

The researchers note that the wolf population in Yellowstone experienced several phases -- from 1995 to 2003 the wolves experienced rapid growth, from 2003 to 2007 the number of wolves stabilized, and the most recent data from 2007 to 2010 shows a decline.

"We're down to extremely low levels of wolves right now, we're down to [similar numbers as] the early years of reintroduction," said Almberg. "So it doesn't look like it's going to be as large and as a stable a population as was maybe initially thought."

Also working on this research were Paul C. Cross, disease ecologist, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center; Andrew P. Dobson, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, Princeton University; and Douglas W. Smith, director, Yellowstone Wolf Project.

The research was supported through the U.S. Geological Survey/National Park Service Park-Oriented Biological Support (POBS); the Yellowstone Wolf Project of the National Park Service; and the National Institutes of Health, Research and Policy for Infectious Disease Dynamics (RAPIDD).

Internet Marketing Will Help You Target Customers | Blog Links

TIP! Offer answers to customers on your site. Whether their desire is conscious or not, everyone who visits your site wants to learn more.

Now that the Internet has shown to be a successful venture for many companies, it is very important that businesses understand how to market their products online. The tips and techniques in this article will help you develop sound Internet marketing goals. Your marketing will improve and your profit grow by using this great advice.

TIP! To improve and strengthen your reputation, you should affiliate with reputable companies and allow them to advertise on your site. Having big names on your site assists in the transfer of trust from those big, trusted companies to you.

Oftentimes, marketing consultant services are prohibitively expensive for small business owners. Luckily, the internet has a wealth of information to help you. There are many forums dedicated to topics of interest to small business owners. Furthermore, there is plenty of free and for-pay literature available to help you along the way. Seminars are also a popular option for career development.

TIP! Make a video of yourself actually using the product you want to sell. This can help the customer visualize the service that he or she is getting.

Make it possible for your customers to rate and submit moderated reviews for your products, including the reasons behind their ratings. Once a buyer has given feedback that illustrates the strong points and weaknesses of a product, other potential customers can make a more-informed purchasing decision. You can use honest reviews and ratings to improve your product offerings, too.

TIP! If you want to get a higher page ranking create a sale! The better your offer, the more outside sites will promote your business. This is like selling something at a loss so you can do more business and get more profits down the line.

Figure out different ways that you can advertise your website. Free or relatively inexpensive ways to advertise your site include hanging posters in community businesses, using social networking sites, or posting on blogs. There are a lot different tactics to draw business. Just be creative, and work hard.

TIP! Do not use AJAX and Flash too often. These may make your site appear fun and interactive, but they do not help search engines index your site, and no search engines means no visitors.

Add content in the form of a blog or forum to prevent your website from becoming boring or irrelevant. Search engines like fresh information, and if your site does not have it, they will move you down in rankings. You could, for instance, write weekly articles on topics related to your products or services.

TIP! Internet marketing businesses can benefit from an effective email marketing campaign. Use a reliable method for your emails.

Do you want to break into the world of Internet marketing? Make sure that your visitors have incentive to sign up for your site. Let your visitors register for freebies of contests, if they allow you to email them future promotions. If there is a perk involved, a person is more apt to turn over their private email to you.

TIP! Illustrate every product?s quality with crisp, clear photographs. Potential buyers will appreciate the fact that they can clearly see the products you are selling.

Uploading your own viral video that includes tags will increase your chances of internet marketing success. Don?t forget to put a link leading to your site in the video?s description. This will have a big impact on the amount of people who visit your website.

TIP! A press release might help you to increase traffic, and it is a fantastic way to market your brand. Develop a powerful and persuasive press release, then reach out to one of the many websites that will publish your release for free.

Although Internet marketing can seem tricky, it uses many ideas from traditional marketing strategies! Apply what you?ve just learned to maximize your business exposure and achieve the success you deserve

Rays?topple Rangers in 11

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:21 p.m. ET Sept. 7, 2012

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - In another time or situation, Ben Zobrist might have dropped down a bunt.

Instead manager Joe Maddon told the Rays shortstop to swing away, and Zobrist delivered a two-run walk-off home run in the 11th inning of Tampa Bay's 3-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday night.

"I've never had a walk-off home run before in my life, regardless of whether it was Little League or high school or college," Zobrist said. "I thought about if it was ever going to happen, but when you're in the moment you just try to have a good, quality at bat."

Zobrist's 16th homer came off Mark Lowe (0-1) after a leadoff walk to B.J. Upton.

Maddon reminded Zobrist not to bunt because with Upton on second base, the Rangers probably would have walked Evan Longoria, the Rays' next hitter.

"If (Upton) stole a bag, then I would have (bunted)," Zobrist said.

For Zobrist, the home run was a perfect finish to a night that started with his wife, Julianna, singing the national anthem.

"That may be the first time in Major League Baseball history that happens, where the wife sings the national anthem and the husband hits a walk-off homer," Maddon observed. "Maybe Honus Wagner and his wife, back in the day. Whenever amplification came on board, you'd have to check that out."

Wade Davis (3-0) got the win after striking out five of the six hitters he faced in the 10th and 11th innings.

The Rays' fifth win in six games featured a total of 29 strikeouts after a duel between starting pitchers Derek Holland of the Rangers and the Rays' Jeremy Hellickson.

Holland struck out a career-high 11 while giving up only two hits and two walks in eight innings. He threw a season-high 116 pitches, retiring five Rays in a span of seven pitches at one point.

Longoria's fourth-inning homer, his 11th, was the first hit off Holland, who was trying to win a fourth straight start for the first time in his career.

"I'm definitely pleased, but at the same time I'm pretty upset," Holland said. "A win is what we really want."

It was the second straight extra-inning game for the Rangers, who arrived at their hotel at 4:40 a.m., Friday after a 5-4, 10-inning win at Kansas City on Thursday night.

Hellickson pitched six innings, giving up four hits including a home run to Michael Young in the fifth inning. It was Young's seventh home run and his third in the last five days.

David Murphy walked after Young's homer, and then Hellickson and four relievers retired the next 17 Rangers in order. The Rays bullpen gave up one single in five innings.

"The fifth inning was a little long," Hellickson said. "I could have gone back out, but with the bullpen we have, there was no reason not to go to them. I mean, they've been doing that all season."

NOTES: Rays 17-game winner David Price has been scratched from his Saturday start because of shoulder soreness. Rookie RHP Chris Archer, called up from Double-A Montgomery on Friday, will start against the Rangers on Saturday night. Maddon expects Price's next start to come next weekend at New York . . . Matt Harrison, the Rangers' 15-game winner, had his next start pushed back from Sunday here to Tuesday at home against Cleveland.

Evacuationas under way as Nicaragua volcano belches

Esteban Felix / AP

A Nicaraguan soldier wears a protective mask as the San Cristobal volcano, in background, spews smoke and ash, near Chinandega, Nicaragua, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012.

By NBC News and wire services

MANAGUA -- Nicaragua's tallest volcano belched an ash cloud nearly a mile into the atmosphere on Saturday, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of nearby residents who heard explosions emanating from its crater.

The 5,725-foot San Cristobal volcano, which sits around 95 miles north of the capital Managua in the country's northwest, has been active in recent years, and stirred in mid-2008, when it expelled gas and rumbled with a series of small eruptions.

Government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo said authorities were still assessing the strength of the volcanic activity. Nearby residents were being evacuated. He said as many as 20,000 people could ultimately be affected by the gas and ash from the volcano.

How To Make Your Computer Faster: Registry Cleaner, Improving ...

We discussed about how to make smartphones run faster and today we will discuss how to make computer run faster

It happens to all of us. You buy a new computer, you set it up, you turn it on, and it blows you away with its blazing speed. Then a year passes, then another, and pretty soon it seems like you're mired in crashes, slowdowns, that dreaded Mac beach ball, a PC that takes ages to start up, or a computer that hangs in limbo when you try to shut it down. You?re left wondering, how to make it run faster. In the past, instead of trying to fix the issue, you might have just bought a new computer. But in this economy it's tough to just buy a new one if yours is running too slow. You'll be happy to know that there's a way to speed it up without spending an arm and a leg.

Yes. There are many solutions available to help your machine run faster. From basic housekeeping to increasing your RAM, these tips will help you learn how to make your computer faster.

Do Some Housekeeping

Whether you have a Mac, a PC, or even a Linux box, if you haven't done regular maintenance since you got your computer, there likely are a lot of simple things you can do to increase its speed.

?If your PC is running slow,? says PC and security expert Robert McMillan, who has written about computer technology since 1996, ?uninstall apps that you're not using. See what's running in the background and remove it if you don't need it. Think about uninstalling Java. That's a major resource hog, and often a big security risk too.? Assess all the unnecessary programs you have running when you turn your computer on.
There are ways to speed up a PC that don't cost a lot of money. You can find plenty of free and built-in utilities for Windows if your computer is running slow. Startup Delayer, a free download, delays programs that may be bogging down your startup time. If you find programs you never use?useless or unwanted stuff bloating your system?it?s always a good idea to uninstall it for good (Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs).

For the programs you decide to keep, Startup Delayer staggers their launch time so that your computer is faster when it starts. The selected programs run in the background after your machine is already booted. It also lets you easily remove programs entirely from startup (without deleting them from your system). If your computer is running slow, keep in mind that many programs launch by default at startup so that they can constantly scan the Internet for updates, which is not necessarily something you want them to do.

On Windows machines, there are also built-in utilities to make a PC faster. Disk Cleanup can speed it up by getting rid of clutter. All those temporary Internet and Windows files, downloads you no longer need and trash you never empty all make your computer run slower. Disk Defragmenter consolidates chopped up files on the hard drive, to make it run faster.

In general, Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools will take you to these tools to fix a slow computer. Microsoft offers detailed online instructions on using these and other potentially speed-enhancing utilities to make it run faster?no matter what versions of Windows you?re using. Microsoft's Web site offers additional information on how to make your PC faster.

In your search, you may have come across many online sources for what are known as registry cleaners. Unfortunately, a lot of these products are bogus programs that cost money and can actually damage your computer rather than making it faster. Microsoft itself has sued several producers of this so-called ?scareware? to get them out of the marketplace, but many simply reappear under a different name. A registry cleaner purports to be a tool for inspecting and repairing the Windows registry?all of these tools are marketed to Windows users?and typically targets users by preying on their vulnerability. (They may have ads saying, ?Are you wondering how to make your computer faster? Let us fix it for free!?) Another typical tactic is persistent popups claiming to increase your computer's speed. These popups may appear even on legitimate sites, and almost invariably contain alarming messages about your computer running slow or needing repairs. Back away from them by shutting down your browser?Alt F4 will close it?if necessary. Do NOT click on these popups. They will most likely cause more harm than good.

Not all registry cleaners are bogus, but they should all be approached with extreme caution, and ONLY downloaded from trusted sites. ?Some are legitimate,? says Robert McMillan,? but they're kind of like diet pills. They promise you a quick fix for something that often cannot be quickly fixed.? Tinkering with your Windows registry is inherently dangerous?you can cause serious damage. It's not something to be attempted by a beginner. A legitimate (and free) registry tool, such as CCleaner also offers other utilities which can help (including getting rid of temporary files and managing startup options).

Tools for Mac and Linux

There are inexpensive and even free ways to speed up your computer if it?s a Mac, too. When it comes to Macs, many people get in the bad habit of leaving them in sleep mode because it is so easy to do. Macs are hard-wired to run cleanup maintenance scripts in the early morning?but if they are always asleep or shut down, the scripts don't run, which can create a backlog of junk that can lead to problems. If you're fairly savvy at using the Terminal prompt you can run these scripts manually which may help you speed up your computer. Better yet, a free utility like Onyx will help, too.

Onyx also assists with other cleanup, maintenance and optimization tasks, including showing you what programs you're actually starting up every time you turn on your computer which can help you identify where to make a fix. (Again, you may be loading things into memory that you never use.) The Onyx site offers downloads for most recent Mac software and hardware configurations, including Snow Leopard, Leopard, Tiger, Panther and even Jaguar.

For Linux machines, a free program (well, almost all Linux programs are free) called kleansweep assists in removing unnecessary files that may be taking up space and draining system resources. A program called PreLoad can also speed up your computer because it improves overall performance on Linux machines, putting unused RAM to use.

Streamlined software alternatives can also make a Linux faster. If you only need basic word processing, don't use OpenOffice with its many features. A program with a smaller footprint like Koffice will be snappier and keep it running faster. If you want your Internet to be faster, Opera is lighter weight than Firefox. If you're running Ubuntu (a popular version of Linux) you can speed up your boot time by fine-tuning the process with Boot-up-Manager, available for download at linux.com.

Use Common Sense

There are some basic actions you can take to make your computer faster. Here are some of the simplest and easiest troubleshooting tips. If you have ten programs open, you're going to be sucking a lot of resources from your CPU, causing it to run slowly. If you're not using a program?close it. The same goes for having many windows open in your web browser, or having many photos open at once in a program like PhotoShop.

I have to confess that this is one of my own worst habits. You should also learn to check your available memory. Just for fun you can press CTL-ALT-DEL on your Windows machine, then click the performance tab, and view available memory. Open a couple of basic programs?word processing software, say, and a web browser?then open PhotoShop (or another memory-intensive program) and open six or seven of those beautiful pictures you took on vacation, and watch what happens to your CPU usage and your available memory. Now you can see how much that slows down your computer.

MenuMeters, a free program for Mac, is a nifty little tool that supplies CPU and activity monitoring. It can clean your Mac and it's free. While there are other ways make a Mac faster, MenuMeters is a popular little add-on.

If you have a lot of large files?a video, photo or extensive music collection, for example?consider keeping them on a separate drive so your computer can run faster. Keep in mind that your operating system?Mac, PC or anything else?will slow significantly if it's on a drive with little available free space. You can fix this by using external hard drives. When buying a separate external drive, it will be worth it to spend a little bit extra and get a faster drive (7200 vs 5400 on a Mac, for example). Keep your machine updated?whatever your OS is?because this will assure that you're getting the latest updates, security patches and bug fixes.

Spyware and Malware

One of the best things you can do is to guard against malware, which comes in so many constantly evolving variations that it's all but impossible to keep up.

Viruses, scareware, trojans, bots, rootkits, worms, spyware, adware?it?s all bad junk, and professionals call it malware (malicious software). Malware can slow a computer down. For a home user, the course of transmission is through the Internet?whether by clicking a link in an infected e-mail, being attacked through a browser vulnerability, or simply visiting a malicious Web site. Unfortunately for Windows users, they have always been the primary targets of malicious software.

?The vast majority of malicious activity today targets Windows PCs, so Mac and Linux users can rightfully feel a sense of security superiority when they're on the Internet,? says Robert McMillan. ?It takes time to write these computer attacks, and if the bad guys feel they'll get a lot more victims by writing something that works on Windows XP, then that's what they're going to do. That said, we're seeing some interest in the Mac platform these days. There are a few Mac Trojan horse programs out there, but they're currently not much of a threat. However, if Apple's market share keeps growing, it's only a matter of time before Mac users really start getting hit, too.? So it?s not just PC users who have to worry about issues caused by malware.

While malware can do tremendous damage to entire systems as it spreads, one of the likeliest and most visible consequences to an unwitting home user may be aggravating slow downs. Not only do you want to get rid of the malware, but you also want to make the computer faster.

If the previously mentioned ways don?t work, fortunately there are many quality anti-virus programs available that can help.

Writer and author Neil Rubenking is an Advisory Board member for the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization. He writes regularly for PC Magazine, and his recent article ranks the current selection of free and paid anti-malware programs available for Windows users to make a PC faster. On the list are a range of choices for both cleanup and prevention. ?A product should do both,? says Rubenking.

There are companies that now make anti-virus and anti-spyware products for Macs. Sophos is one of them; it recently announced its discovery of the nasty-sounding, but apparently not particularly dangerous, ?Blackhole RAT,? a Trojan aimed at Macs. (Sophos offers a free anti-virus program for Mac home users.)

It?s very important to protect your computer from malware, but, surprisingly, it probably isn?t necessary to spend money because you can find a free speed-up program out there.

?If I were a Mac user, I probably wouldn't buy AV (anti-virus software) right now,? explains McMillan. ?But then I wouldn't pay for it on my PC either. The anti-virus industry's dirty little secret is that you really don't need to buy AV any more, especially if you avoid risky behavior online. Avoiding open Wi-Fi, risky sites and questionable documents, keeping your software patched, and using free AV such as Microsoft's OneCare or AVG will do a lot to keep you secure.? Learning how to make your computer fast doesn?t have to cost you a lot of cash.

There are a number of other highly regarded free sources of protection (see Neil Rubenking?s detailed article above); many of them also offer maintenance utilities which will help make the computer faster and keep it running smoothly on other fronts.

Linux machines are currently the safest of the three major operating systems. But there is malware out there that affects Linux. However, while experts don't all agree, many discount the likely harm of widespread damage from Linux malware.

Individual users, however, may be able to cause damage to their own systems, a point worth noting since many Netbooks shipped to newbies came equipped with various flavors of Linux (Red Hat, Fedora, Ubuntu). ?It's possible for someone brand-new to Linux to work hard to overcome various built-in system protections, fetch off the Internet a program written to hurt Linux systems, run it with root-user ('God'-user) authority, and thereby damage or subvert the system so it needs to be shut down and rebuilt,? says senior system administrator and well-known Linux expert Rick Moen. However, ?There are features throughout the system to discourage such actions.?

It certainly is possible that some day as Linux gets more popular among consumers, hackers will be more interested in writing malicious code directed at it, but it may not be aimed at laptops or desktops. Even today Linux?long regarded as a programmer's language and not really for the average user?is the engine inside many incredibly popular consumer appliances, not just computers.

?Every single TiVo has a full-blown Linux computer under the hood,? says Moen. ?Ditto many smartphones, many PDAs, most residential Wi-Fi gateway routers, and even IBM's Watson supercomputer that just won the Jeopardy playoff. Somehow, one never hears that regular users will never be able to figure out a TiVo?but then, many of the most ubiquitous Linux devices, such as TiVos, get perceived as somehow not even being computers at all.?

While there are lots of free resources for preventing malware, that won?t make you feel much better if you?re already infected and battling time-consuming popups, browser hijacks, or worse. At that point you just want to speed up your computer.

The Microsoft Malware Protection center offers tools for determining if you're infected, and a 24-hour hotline for security and virus issues: 1-866-PCSafety (1-866-727-2338) or you can visit their Web site. Clearing these issues up can definitely make a computer run faster.

There are also a number of free online forums moderated by experts, which can help you diagnose and treat your problem. Spyware Info Forum and the LandzDown forum are good places to start.

While getting rid of malware and doing some computer housekeeping may provide some fixes, that?s not all you?ll need to do to speed up your PC, Mac or Linux computer. You can also adjust some hardware issues.

Increase Your Memory

One of the simplest and most effective ways to get a faster computer, particularly if it's a bit older and has less than two gigabytes of RAM, is simply to add more. ?Spend your money on memory,? says Robert McMillan.

RAM (random access memory) is what your computer uses to read and write data?to follow your instructions and make your programs run. If you want to increase speed, you?ll need enough RAM. When you don't have enough RAM for the task at hand, the computer is forced to do what's called ?paging??essentially borrowing memory from your hard drive. This borrowed memory is much slower than RAM memory, and the process used to access it can slow your computer to a crawl.

If you have less than two gigabytes of RAM, adding RAM will likely significantly speed up a slow PC or Mac. If you already have two gigabytes or more of RAM, additional memory may improve performance for memory-intensive tasks and programs (like video editing, gaming or using PhotoShop); however, you may not see dramatic improvement in day-to-day tasks like web surfing or word processing.

You can't just add any memory chip to your computer. The RAM you add must be compatible with what you are already using, and it must fit the slot available. There are many different types of RAM depending on the age, OS and hardware you're using. Memory seller Crucial offers a simple free tool that will scan your system to let you know what kind of memory to buy, how much you can add to your system and how many slots are available. You can then buy the RAM directly from Crucial, or shop around. NewEgg and Frys.com offer discounted RAM from quality suppliers.

It is important to buy and use high-quality RAM?look for brands like Hynix, Samsung, Nanya, Micron, Crucial and Kingston. If you have a Mac, you probably already know that RAM is very high-priced when bought through Apple. Mac RAM Direct offers the same premium RAM from the same suppliers (Apple doesn't manufacture its own RAM), usually at a significant discount, and it comes with a lifetime replacement warranty. In many cases, the RAM you buy here for older Macs will make your computer run faster than the RAM that came from Apple originally.

Installing RAM can be a very simple process even for the technologically impaired, and there are many guides out there. However, some computers (smaller laptops, usually) have RAM tucked away in inaccessible places, making installation too intimidating for a newbie.

Apple offers detailed instructions on its Web site (e.g. this is a tutorial for the MacBook) for upgrading RAM (even for old iBooks and Powerbooks) to make it run faster. Simply search in the Apple support forums for your make and model. The extensive site Macrumors also offers detailed tips and guides to buying, installing and testing RAM.

If you?re learning how to make a PC run faster by adding RAM, PCWorld has a nice straightforward tutorial for upgrading RAM in a desktop. Always remember to work safely?your computer must be turned off and battery removed (if it is a laptop) before attempting any upgrade.

Are you more concerned with how to make your Internet faster rather than your actual computer? If so, a good place to start is a basic bandwidth speed test: Check out services like this one at McAfee. (Be careful to use a trusted source for this kind of testing?bogus bandwidth testing sites are also frequent lurking places for scareware.) If you're paying for high-speed Internet and bandwidth tests show you?re not getting it consistently, using these tricks won't help. Call your Internet provider to complain and ask how to make your Internet faster.

Tips on Malware

It is advisable to install a quality anti-virus or anti-spyware program from a trusted (and free, ideally) source; however, more is not better. If more than one such real-time program is installed on your computer, you may generate conflicts rather than create a solution. Choose a single quality program and keep it up to date. Keep your system updated as well.

If you want to make your computer faster, know that prevention is always best. Experts advise that p2p (peer-to-peer) networks are notoriously risky when it comes to malware, as are open Wi-Fi connections. Files with .EXE, .DOC, .PDF are also more likely to be dangerous?in general it's best not to open any attachment you receive online, even from a friend, unless you are expecting it. Robert McMillan wrote a great article in PCWorld for advanced users detailing some advanced protection tactics that will help you remember how to speed up a computer. Don?t worry; you?re not being paranoid. They are out to get you.
