Landmark Hanoi hotel unearths Vietnam War bunker

The siren's wail at the historic Metropole Hotel sent American folk singer Joan Baez and other guests scampering across a garden and into an underground bunker. Even through five feet of concrete, they could still hear the roar of American bombs raining on parts of Hanoi.

Nearly four decades have passed since the so-called Christmas Bombings rocked parts of Vietnam's capital in December 1972. After the war ended three years later, the bunker was sealed and all but forgotten.

Its exact location remained a mystery until this summer, when a worker's drill pierced its thick concrete roof during renovations of a poolside bar. Since then, workers have been excavating the flooded and low-ceilinged space. Not much has been found in the seven rooms: a wine bottle, a rusty paint can and a light bulb still in a socket. But a few tales remain, some involving famous guests.

"If these walls could talk, they would tell a lot of stories," says hotel general manager Kai Speth, while giving The Associated Press an exclusive first glimpse. The bomb shelter "needs to be brought back into the life of the hotel as a reminder of what this hotel and this town went through."

The North Vietnamese government used the French colonial-era hotel, a stately four-story building in the shadow of Hanoi's Opera House, to house foreign guests during the war.

If You Go...

  1. METROPOLE HOTEL

: 15 Ngo Quyen St., Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, Vietnam; 011-84-4-38266919. Nightly rates for online reservations begin at around $300 a night including taxes.

Nguyen Thi Xuan Phuong, now 82, remembers staying in the bunker during the Christmas Bombings with anti-war activist Baez. On one of the 12 nights that B-52s pounded areas around the city, the lights went out, prompting a few foreigners to scream in the darkness.

"Can you sing a song?" Phuong asked the young singer. "We may not change the situation, but your songs may help calm people down." When Baez's voice rang out as someone plucked a guitar, the bunker was revitalized, Phuong recalls.

Others who sheltered there included war correspondents and American actress Jane Fonda, says Phuong, who worked for the government as a doctor assisting foreign guests.

Fonda's visit to enemy territory ignited fury at home. She criticized U.S. policy on North Vietnamese radio and earned the nickname "Hanoi Jane" after posing for a photo atop an anti-aircraft gun ? an incident that Fonda later said she regretted.

Publicists for Baez and Fonda did not respond to requests for comment.

French entrepreneurs opened the Metropole in 1901, calling it the "the largest and best appointed hotel in Indo-China." Over the years, it welcomed celebrities from Charlie Chaplin ? who came in 1936 on his honeymoon ? to Graham Greene, who wrote parts of his famous novel, "The Quiet American," at the hotel.

The Metropole was renamed the Thong Nhat (Reunification) Hotel after Vietnam gained its independence from France in 1954. But after communist forces won the Vietnam War in 1975, the hotel languished under state management as a reunified Vietnam struggled to recover from fighting that killed some 58,000 Americans and an estimated 3 million Vietnamese.

It wasn't until the early 1990s, after a French company assumed partial ownership, that the Metropole regained its earlier name and its place as one of the city's spots to see and be seen.

Today, with Vietnam emerging as one of Asia's fastest growing economies, Hanoi's nouveau riche roll up in Bentleys and Rolls-Royces and toss down $70 per person on Sunday brunch. Upscale boutiques line its green-shuttered white facade, with electric blue handbags selling at Hermes for $7,000 ? nearly seven years' salary for the average Vietnamese. Mick Jagger, Angelina Jolie and Fidel Castro have all spent the night.

Even those who can't afford the $10 cocktails gravitate toward the city landmark. Every day soon-to-be Vietnamese brides in pouffy layers of white silk and lace pose for wedding photos outside its walls.

Discovery of the roughly 500 square-foot (nearly 50 square-meter) bunker with its mildewed, mustard-colored walls raises questions about how it will be preserved and who will be allowed to visit, especially since half of the hotel is indirectly owned by the government.

Prominent Vietnamese historian Duong Trung Quoc says it should be opened to the public. While the bunker primarily protected foreign guests, he says it could play an important role in illuminating Vietnam War history.

But Speth, the general manager, says he doesn't want mobs of tourists turning his five-star hotel into a Southeast Asian "Grand Central Station."

"I have an obligation to my guests to keep the Metropole luxurious and exclusive," he says. "If I just leave it open, can you imagine? All of the tour guides of Hanoi would take everybody down there."

We're all pulling for Windows Phone. Have been for a while. Thing is, it's just not there yet. There's no single drop-dead-amazing god-phone on the platform. Yet. Hopefully, Nokia's going to be pulling back the curtain on just that next week at Nokia World. Here's what we (think we) know so far. More »

Rangers star Hamilton hampered by groin injury

By BEN WALKER

updated 8:19 p.m. ET Oct. 20, 2011

ST. LOUIS - Texas Rangers star Josh Hamilton would love to get a couple of weeks off to let his sore groin heal. Trouble is, there's no time to rest during the World Series.

Stuck in a power slump, Hamilton was set to play Game 2 Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. The reigning AL MVP has been nursing a strained left groin for about two months and admits the injury is getting worse.

If this were the regular season, he said, "I'd probably be on the disabled list."

"It's OK," he said. "We got six games left."

Hamilton has not hit a home run in the postseason this year. He went 0 for 4 against Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals' bullpen on Wednesday night, and was hitting .267 with seven RBIs in these playoffs and World Series when he spoke.

Said Rangers president Nolan Ryan: "We've been aware of it. So far, it has been manageable. I'm optimistic that it will stay that way."

Hamilton estimated he was at about 75 to 80 percent strength. He grimaced during a check swing in Game 1, and said those half-swings were particularly painful. Asked if the injury affected him in other ways, he said "running and throwing and whatever else."

"If I need to run a ball out, I run it out," he said. "Otherwise, I save my bullets for the outfield."

Hamilton, in fact, checked his swing when he batted in the first inning Thursday night. He then shattered his bat on a soft groundout, and slowly jogged to first base.

Hamilton started the opener in center field. He shifted over to left field for Game 2, with speedy Craig Gentry in center. Gentry gives Texas another right-handed bat against St. Louis lefty Jaime Garcia.

"No, the move is not a concession," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Whenever I put Gentry in our lineup, he plays center and Hamilton goes over to left."

"It's obvious that he has some discomfort, but it's not enough to take him out of the lineup," he said.

With no designated hitter in the NL city, it was either play the outfield or sit for Hamilton.

"I can't afford to take Hamilton out of my lineup," Washington said. "Even if Hamilton doesn't do anything, he makes a difference just with his presence in our lineup, and I want his presence in there tonight."

Hamilton hit .298 with 25 home runs and 94 RBIs during the regular season. He missed more than a month after breaking his arm on a headfirst slide.

Hamilton said he felt he could still make a significant contribution, even if he's not able to use his lower body to drive the ball out of the park.

"I can hit line drives with my upper body," he said.

Washington said he checks with Hamilton every day ? and has for a while ? before penciling him into the lineup.

Hamilton has struggled mightily in the World Series. He went 2 for 20 in a five-game loss to the San Francisco Giants last season before struggling in the opening game against St. Louis.

"It's something he can manage. He's been managing it," Washington said. "It's just been exposed more because we're the only game in town. Everybody sees it. But it's something he's been managing, and we've been managing it. Like I said earlier, I expect Hamilton to come up big tonight."

EU regulators raid banks in interest-rate probe: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The European Commission seized documents from several major banks on Tuesday, marking the intensification of a world-wide law-enforcement probe into how key interest rates are set, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the situation.

European officials are investigating an interest rate called the Euro Interbank Offered Rate, or Euribor, the newspaper said, citing the people.

WSJ said the European regulators are delving into the possibility that financial companies tried to manipulate the Euribor rate. It said the full list of financial firms raided on Tuesday wasn't clear.

Euribor rates are traditionally the main gauge of unsecured interbank euro lending and a mix of interest rate expectations and banks' appetite for lending.

A spokeswoman for the European Commission wasn't immediately available for comment.

Work begins on 'Extreme Makeover' homes in Joplin (AP)

JOPLIN, Mo. ? When executives with "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" contacted builder Sam Clifton about a project in Joplin, he told them it was a great idea, but building a single home wouldn't send much of a message to a community that lost more than 7,000 of them to a devastating spring tornado.

So on Wednesday, work began on a project to build seven homes in seven days that will be featured on the popular ABC show. It is another effort by volunteers to reshape the southwest Missouri community that still in the early stages of recovering from the May 22 twister that killed 162 people, one of the worst tornadoes in U.S. history.

The homes, which are going up a few blocks from the city's hospital, which was destroyed, will be far from opulent. Clifton, who is overseeing the project, said the new units will be functional, 1,300- to 1,800-square-foot homes, similar in size and style to many of the dwellings destroyed in the tornado.

"We want to help get the community going," Clifton said. "Get some excitement going in the town. That's my goal."

The TV show typically rebuilds a single home for a family that has been struck with some tragic circumstances. In Joplin's case, the seven homes are being built along the same street, just a few blocks from the hospital that was destroyed in the tornado.

"This is what we do," said Diane Korman, senior producer for the program. "We look for families in trouble and how to help them."

Korman said the show's staff gathered on May 23, the day after the tornado, to discuss a project in Joplin. They contacted Clifton, with whom they had worked on a 2009 show in Ash Grove, Mo., and concurred with his assessment that the project needed to be bigger than one home.

The families getting the new homes range in size from two to six, and their stories are compelling.

They include single mother Crystal Whitely, who took cover with her three children in a bathtub. Two were killed, leaving only Whitely and her 4-year-old daughter, Keana. Joplin firefighter Kyle Howard was working the night of the tornado and didn't know if his family survived, yet he rescued trapped victims and tended to injured people as he drove through the rubble to get home.

Clifton said 10,000 volunteers have signed up to help with the project, along with 21 general contractors from around the region and hundreds of skilled tradesmen.

The show paid for the families to take a trip to Disney World for the week. They'll be back on Oct. 26, when host Ty Pennington will deliver the famous "move that bus" proclamation and the families will see the homes for the first time.

The episode is scheduled to be the 200th for the program, and is tentatively scheduled to air Jan. 20.

The TV show has generated a lot of buzz in Joplin, where new homes are springing up and construction crews work late into the night. Millions of tons of debris have been cleared, and for-sale signs dot now-vacant land ? in some cases, land that stretches for several blocks.

Banks and pharmacies are operating out of makeshift buildings or mobile homes. The Home Depot, where several people died in the tornado, has reopened in a huge tent.

Signs of rebirth are everywhere, but there's still a lot of work ahead. Huge tarps still cover holes and blown-out walls on many homes, there are still piles of debris awaiting disposal and homes damaged beyond repair awaiting demolition.

Clifton, who lives in Springfield, characterizes Joplin's process of rebuilding as slow.

"I think people are waiting to see what the community will do, if their neighbors will rebuild."

The "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" project will involve a massive undertaking in a short amount of time. But Clifton has no worries the homes will be finished on time. All seven were progressing nicely on Wednesday, with newly-poured foundations poured, floors in place, walls already up. One house already had the beams for the roof.

Each of the homes has a different design, with exteriors a mix of siding and stone.

Volunteers are working 12-hour shifts, and work is going around the clock.

"We've got people that lost their houses who wanted to come help us," Clifton said.

All of the materials for the project were donated, and churches in Joplin are working together to prepare about 30,000 meals for those involved in the building process.

It's not the first time Clifton was involved in an "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" project. In 2009, his Millstone Custom Homes led the effort to provide a new home for the Hampton family in Ash Grove, Mo.

Despite the heartbreak and tragedy in Joplin, the makers of the show have been overwhelmed by the spirit, Korman said.

"There is such a heart here in Joplin," she said. "It's such a strong community."
