LONDON (AP) -England coach Fabio Capello picked under-pressure captain John Terry and omitted Wayne Rooney for friendly matches against Spain and Sweden at Wembley.

With Terry being investigated over allegations he racially abused an opponent, Capello says he will rest the Chelsea defender against the world champions on Saturday but wants him available three days later.

Capello left out Rooney to test out alternatives to the Manchester United striker, who is suspended for the start of England's European Championship campaign next year. Capello instead picked Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge and Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor, but left out Liverpool striker Andy Carroll.

Sturridge and Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell were given their first call-ups.

With Liverpool defender Glen Johnson returning from injury, Capello left United's Rio Ferdinand and Manchester City's Micah Richards out of the squad.
