Union Leaders Send Labor Day Message To Candidates

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It's the holiday that marks the unofficial end of summer.

But every four years, Labor Day marks another milestone ? the blurring of the line between ?labor? and ?politics?.

When UFCW Local 9 held its annual Labor Day family picnic, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney were no-shows.

But union leaders were ready, just in case

"We'd have to tell them save the middle class and don't make us second class citizens," said Local 9 President Rich Morgan.

Labor Day marks the unofficial start of the homestretch in the presidential campaign, and job creation is expected to be one of the key issues.

"Chanting the words over and over doesn't necessarily create jobs," said Local 9's Dan Bartel.

?Right now there's certain folks in the government that would like to have two classes of people, the rich and the poor," added the local?s Rich Morgan.

"You can create a lot of jobs that are low wage jobs that actually put people to work, but fail to life them above the poverty level," said the union?s Dan Bartel.

"If you're going to have jobs without good benefits and stuff, it's hard to even survive," Rich Morgan added.

?Corporate America has been represented well enough or almost too good, and we'd like to see working Americans get represented" said Dan Bartel.

But labor union membership nationwide is falling -- 11.8% percent of American wage and salary workers belonged to labor unions last year, down from 11.9% the year before.

"UFCW has indicated more efforts going out and organizing, and it should be a good time to organize, as tough as times are," said the union?s Dan Bartel.

"The unions are the last safeguard of the working class."
